The Last Of Us season two teased in HBO promo

The Last of Us season two has been teased in a new trailer for HBO’s upcoming shows and seems to be taking a huge departure from the original games.

Based on the hit PlayStation franchise, the first season followed survivors Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) who navigate a post-apocalyptic world overrun by fungal zombies.

At the end of the nine-episode first outing, Joel makes the impossible choice to save Ellie from certain death, despite her immunity from the virus making her humanity’s last hope.

Season two will be based on the second entry to the video game franchise, which was released to consoles in 2020.

Pedro and Bella reprise their roles alongside newcomer Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Jeffrey Wright as Isaac Dixon and Isabela Merced as Ellie’s love interest Dina.

Also joining the cast is Schitt’s Creek favourite Catherine O’Hara in an undisclosed role.

One of her scenes featured heavily in the short teaser trailer for season two, included in an exciting sizzle reel of HBO shows that dropped on Sunday.

In the scene, her character is apparently wondering about Ellie and asks Joel: “Did you hurt her?”

To which Joel tearfully confesses: “I saved her.”

Joel’s impassioned decision to save Ellie from doctors who would have killed her to find a cure for the cordyceps infection drives much of the conflict in the second game.

However, the trailer has already deviated significantly from the original story as, in the game, Joel is actually confessing to his brother Tommy, portrayed in the series by Gabriel Luna.

With the trailer already teasing some huge departures from the games’ narrative, fans are being kept on their toes about the direction of the HBO adaptation’s second installment.

Some brief snippets have also teased plenty of violent moments and terrifying encounters with infected to come.

An exact release date has yet to be confirmed, but season two is slated for 2025 and is expected to consist of seven episodes. A third season is also being planned but hasn’t been officially commissioned.

Alongside the sneak peek at The Last of Us, HBO viewers were also treated to a snippet of the next Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

There were also first looks at the next seasons of The White Lotus, And Just Like That… season three and Industry.

The Last of Us is available to stream on Sky Go and NOW.
