GMB: Kate Garraway speaks about Derek and dementia

Kate Garraway made a heart-wrenching confession about her late husband Derek Draper as she returned to Good Morning Britain on Monday.

The mother of two lost her husband in January following a prolonged struggle with the long-term effects of Covid. During an emotional conversation with guests John and Nula, who met under extraordinary circumstances as both had spouses in care suffering from Dementia, Kate discussed Derek's health.

Both are now advocating for customer-facing businesses to provide their employees with specialist dementia training after marrying in 2016.

Kate initiated the conversation by discussing how the couple met in "the saddest of circumstances" but it still "brought something positive," reports the Mirror.

"It wasn't expected," Nula confessed before adding: "We were going in and out of a care home with carers to see your loved one, and Bonnie just happened to come in and out of James' room and I got to know her.

"And I would take her down and John downstairs for a coffee and hot chocolate with Bonnie and sometimes I would help to bath her and she became part of the corridor.

"Her room was next door to James and I really got to know her very well. She didn't know me, she just saw me as a face coming through the door and she would sometimes smile and sometimes she wouldn't."

"She would be sitting in James' room, usually going through his drawers or eating his chocolates, and often when she was cold, I would give her my pashmina, and it was a strange sort of time and I'd actually never met John on any of these occasions, we just didn't seem to meet."

She added: "And one day the manager of the care home decided to have a lunch for the spouses and there were only three of us spouses, the rest were parents, children of parents, so we had the lunch, John appeared and he was John, you know, and I didn't pay much attention."

Nula went on to explain she and John emailed each other for a year, to which Kate chipped in: "As support and a lot of people that are in this situation, they are being cared for and supported by their children and it is increasingly more common with people's partner as well."

John explained: "If I could just say the thing that we started talking about as soon as we met and haven't stopped talking about to this day, is how little care there is for people like us who are caring for someone with dementia."

"And this new initiative that's being launched by Nationwide to have pop-up clinics all over the country in their branches. You don't have to bank with them, anyone can now walk in off the high street and get help and the help."

Kate opened up about the challenges of being a carer, reflecting on her own circumstances: "This is something that I have been through a little bit. Derek did not have dementia but there was a sense after COVID he was absolutely the same person, still loved him as much but there was a change."

She also touched on the gradual nature of dementia care, adding: "And with dementia, this doesn't happen overnight because it's something very slow and the person caring for them has to learn how to love that person that they still love in a different way.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
