The BBC Breakfast came to a halt on Monday (August 5) to announce the "sad" news that England cricket star Graham Thorpe had died, aged 55.

Ben Thompson and Sarah Campbell were hosting, both standing in for usual presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent, when the show came to a halt to update viewers on the sudden death of a sporting legend. News that was a shock for most.

Speaking to camera as the news landed sports presenter John Watson announced: "Just some more news to bring to you this morning away from the Olympics and some sad news as-well.

"News of the death of the former cricketer Graham Thorpe at the age of just 55. His family revealed he had been diagnosed with a serious illness back in March of 2022."

John told viewers: "He was due to take up a coaching role at the time, he had a really successful career at the time especially as a batsman with England and Surrey where he spent his entire career.
