During the latest instalment of Breakfast with Eamonn and Isabel, a reporter disrupted the regular broadcast to share the tragic news that former England batter Graham Thorpe had died at the age of 55.

Eamonn Holmes turned to his co-star Paul Coyte and said: "Paul's got some breaking news for you this morning in the sports world."

Paul shared: "Yes, some very sad news. England has lost one of their greatest batsmen in modern times at the age of just 55, he's passed away."

The channel cut to a quick break before Paul opened up about Graham's untimely death.

Paul explained: "[He died] at the age of 55 and let me tell you what, that is no age. He's a Surrey and England legend with 16 Test hundreds and he scored over 200 Tests playing for England."

He continued: "We knew that he'd been ill a couple of years ago, but we had not heard anything for a while, but Surrey have announced the news that he's passed away today.

"So very sad, but a real great England player," the presenter concluded.

Responding to the tragic news, Eamonn added: "It's very sad."

The England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement: "There seem to be no appropriate words to describe the deep shock we feel at Graham's death.

"More than one of England's finest-ever batters, he was a beloved member of the cricket family and revered by fans all over the world.

"His skill was unquestioned, and his abilities and achievements across a 13-year international career brought so much happiness to his team-mates and England and Surrey CCC supporters alike.
