BBC Radio 2's Vernon Kay has issued an apology after a blunder made during his live show caught the attention of observant listeners. During the programme's Ten To The Top quiz, the 50-year-old was impressed by contestant Steve, who breezed through several music trivia questions and racked up an impressive 18 points.

During the quiz, Steve was tasked with identifying a track from The Supremes which was covered by Kim Wilde. The presenter then went on to play the song If I Can't Have You, instead of the correct You Keep Me Hangin' On. Despite the blunder however, Steve managed to get the question right, but was later beat by a rival listener.

Later on in the broadcast, Vernon told fans that he had been inundated with messages pointing out the musical mishap, reports the Manchester Evening News.

He candidly admitted: "I'm going to hold my hands up, we've made a bobo."

Fully aware of the significance the quiz has on many, he offered a heartfelt apology.

"I apologise whole-heartedly because I know how important it is to some people, the 10:30 [quiz]," he shared.

"When we asked Steve earlier on Ten To The Tops for The Supremes song, the Kim Wilde cover, now, he correctly answered, Keep Me Hanging On, even though we played a different Kim song in the clip.

"So, Steve was right, thankfully, despite our mistake, slap wrists all round... apologies."

Vernon gave kudos to his listeners for their attentiveness, saying with a chuckle: "It's good, thanks for keeping us on our toes and alert, we like it.

"So yeah, he was right, he did give us a right answer, we played the wrong clip."

Accepting the mistake in good humour, he added: "We all can't swan around like we're perfect, we've got a lot on," before continuing to say that "it would be a boring place" if they didn't make errors.

Vernon Kay's BBC Radio 2 show airs weekdays from 9.30am.
