Outlander season 7 part 2 trailer on STARZ

Popular Starz series Outlander, which debuted its first season a decade ago back in 2014, has been known to air some pretty steamy scenes over the years. The historical fantasy show, which is based on Diana Gabaldon’s book series of the same name, sees romantic leads Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) get intimate on a pretty regular basis.

However, some fans who are particularly invested in how the physical part of their relationship is conveyed on-screen have expressed their concerns about how intimacy between the characters changes over the later seasons. Taking to Reddit, self-professed “new viewer” No_General1198 talked about their admiration for the way sex is portrayed in the show.

“I will be honest, I fell in love with Outlander because of the romance, and love between Clair and Jamie,” they confessed. “Somewhere down the line, the plot kept me coming back, but still (three seasons in) all I really care about are the moments they have together.

“When I first watched season 1, I was absolutely blown away by the sex scenes. It felt like the first time I had ever really watched a sex scene that was truly raw, romantic, and honest.

“I know some people found them to be a lot, I understand watching sex on TV, in general, can be jarring for some. But not many shows have sex scenes so real.”

However, they went on to express their fears that the relationship might be becoming less passionate over time, saying: “As I’ve kept watching, I have noticed those scenes have changed… or I guess slowed down… and I can’t help but feel… sad about it… like a level of intimacy isn’t there anymore.”

They went on to explain how they had been “searching forever” to find a show that is “sexy” from a female perspective.

“I fear the later seasons are not like that,” they added. “WITHOUT spoilers, is this true? Do the sex scenes go away? If so - why?” (sic)

Taking to the comments, other fans shared their thoughts on how sex is handled in the show, with some viewers arguing that the sex scenes in the show change to reflect the characters ageing.

One replied: “No the sex scenes don’t go away, but they do change as the characters have changed. In later seasons, Claire and Jaime are 20 years older and have experienced a lot, and the sex scenes reflect that, IMO.” (sic)

While another commented: “Not gonna lie, the sex scenes change a LOT. Not that we, as viewers, are owed them, but yes, they become more tame although both the romance and passion remain.

“In the beginning, there was a huge amount of buzz about the groundbreaking sex scenes and celebrating the ‘female gaze’ and all that. Not so much after season 1.” (sic)

A third person advised: “Sex scenes do change in a way but they don't disappear, I'm like you I watched 100% for the romance and I already watched all seasons and was never disappointed.” (sic)

While one more confessed: “I almost dare not admit this but I fast forward through most of the sex scenes on rewatch. I'm here for the time travel and history stuff. I love ‘man out of time’ stories. I desperately want someone to reboot Adam Adamant!”

Following the closure of Lionsgate+ in the UK, new episodes of Outlander will be available to stream on Prime Video channel MGM+. You must be an Amazon Prime member before you can sign up for MGM+.
