GMB correspondent says Southgate instead of Southport during report

Good Morning Britain fans were fuming as a newsreader mispronounced a town name when covering the top headlines. News reader Richard Gaisford was reporting on the latest updates from the unrest around the country, following the tragic killing of three little girls in Southport earlier in the week.

But he angered ITV fans when he got the name of the town wrong, calling it Southgate instead of Southport. After speaking about the riots that had broken out in Hartlepool and London, the news presenter said: "Much of the trouble we have seen has been related to disinformation online.

"We will remember, after the horrific events in Southgate, there were messages and news articles online, saying it was all down to a Muslim asylum seeker. That is clearly not the case."

Fans at home were quick to pick up on the correspondent's mistake as they complained on social media. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), one user criticised Richard, saying: "It was 'Southport' Gaisford you d**k... not Southgate. Get it right..#GMB".

Another questioned: "Horrific events in Southgate? [Thinking emoji] #GMB".

The 17-year-old killer, who took the lives of three little girls and injured many others, was named as Axel Rudakubana yesterday.

He made his first appearance in court on Thursday since being charged with murdering Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, at The Hart Space children's centre in Southport, Merseyside, on Monday.

As he's not 18 until 7th August, it was expected Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC would allow automatic anonymity reporting restrictions to stop his name from being published until next week.

But instead the judge agreed with a submission from media, including the Daily Express, that due to the exceptional circumstances of recent riots and protests - and fake news wrongly suggesting the suspect was an illegal immigrant - it was vital the true facts be made public.

The tragic incident has sparked a series of protests and lawlessness across the country, including a violence riot in Southport on Tuesday evening and incidents in London and Manchester on Wednesday night.

More than 100 people were arrested at a protest in Whitehall on Wednesday night, while there was also unrest in Hartlepool, Manchester and Aldershot.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV and ITVX
