Andy Murray to retire after Paris Olympics

Andy Murray has played his final competitive match in his tennis career following an emotional loss to the United States. The 37-year old made it to the quarter-finals in Men's Doubles with fellow Brit, Dan Evans, in the 2024 Olympic Games.

The pair fought well against Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul, however the Americans triumphed in straight sets and progressed through to the semi-finals.

Many famous faces have reacted to his defeat and taken to social media to thank Andy for his remarkable career. The tennis star has previously won the Gold medal for Team GB in London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Radio 1 presenter Greg James tweeted: "It’s going to be awful having to watch tennis and not feel sick to your stomach isn’t it. Thank you Andy Murray - it’s been, at times, a complete f*****g nightmare but I wouldn’t change any of it. I don’t even want to debate it, he’s our greatest ever sportsperson."

Prime Minister Keir Starmer penned: "1 Davis Cup, 2 Olympic golds and 3 Grand Slams. But more than that, thanks @andy_murray for two decades of phenomenal entertainment and sportsmanship."

Comedian Dara Ó Briain also said: "Sad to see @andy_murray finish playing, after a brilliant career. The last of the Mock The Week gang, this is the final hurrah for us all."

London mayor Sadiq Khan commented on X: "Andy Murray until the end. Thank you for the skill, the courage, the joy, the memories - and the drama."

Piers Morgan shared a photo of him posing next to Andy, penning: Farewell @andymurray - Britain’s tennis [goat] and, one of our greatest stars of any sport. Loved his passion, fire, will-to-win and irascible persona. Great guy off the court, absolute warrior on it. We’ll miss him, though our nails won’t. Thanks for all the incredible memories Andy."

2024 Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz said: "It was a privilege to share the court with you, Andy! Congratulations on a legendary career and for being an example to all. You will always have a fan here!"

The Scottish superstar confirmed that the Paris 2024 Olympics would be his final appearance before retiring from professional tennis.

Taking to X, Andy penned: "Arrived in Paris for my last ever tennis tournament. Competing for Team GB has been by far the most memorable weeks of my career and I'm extremely proud to get to do it one final time!"

Andy had an emotional final appearance during the Wimbledon Championships a few weeks earlier. The two-time Wimbledon champion played alongside his brother, Jamie, but were knocked out during the first match.

During a teary post-match interview with Sue Barker, Andy paid tribute to his wife, Kim, and his children, quipping he wouldn't keep the presenter "too long" as it was "past their bedtimes".
