Zoe Ball made a heartbreaking confession to Channel 5 legend Jane McDonald as she appeared on her BBC Radio 2 show for a catch-up.

As Jane spoke about her new book, which addresses the loss of her husband, Zoe told her: "I was just telling you there actually how much it meant to me reading this book.

"It made me laugh, it made me cry. It gave me an excuse to have a little cry, which we all need to do."

This month Jane released her latest book Let The Light In that shares what she has learned over the course of her life.

In the book she shared how she was planning a golden retirement with her beloved partner Eddie Rothe, when a shocking cancer diagnosis changed everything.

Ed became terminally ill in 2021 and Jane nursed him at home until the end, on her own, with the UK in lockdown.

At first she was overwhelmed, but slowly gathered strength from caring for her loved one, and now sees that it was a privilege to be there for him.

Discussing her grief, Jane shared previously on Lorraine: “You have to find your way of dealing with it, it’s not easy, it never leaves you either. Everybody thinks, ‘Oh, she’s back on track’.

“No, it never leaves you, I have to make a decision every morning what my day is going to be like.

“Because you can go that way (gesturing with her hands) or you can go that way and I choose to go the positive way and it’s not always easy and if you have a bad day that’s fine, have a bad day.

“But in general, now I look at my life and I think I’ve got a lot more good days in my life than I have bad days now so I’ve come on leaps and bounds and I think the music and touring again and getting back with my band and writing new stuff again, it’s given me such joy and a purpose."

Zoe had previously spoken of forming a close relationship with her mother, after 14 years of estrangement. She just two years old when her parents divorced, and she was raised by her dad, the children's TV presenter Johnny Ball, and her step-mother Di. She did not see her mother From age five until her late teens.

"Dad was always really cool about me seeing mum if I wanted to. But although she sent birthday cards and presents, I never responded."

They eventually reconciled after Zoe received an invitation to her mother's 40th birthday party. She agreed to attend, but almost backed out at the last moment.

"I could hardly breathe," she told the Mirror in 1997. "My heart started pounding like mad. I suddenly panicked: 'What if we hate each other?'"
