Jim Carrey declares we don't matter in weird red carpet interview
The unveiling of the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer has triggered a frenzy amongst Jim Carrey enthusiasts.
A maestro of physical comedy, Carrey's filmography includes classics like The Mask, Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura and The Grinch. Despite his long list of successes, the 62-year-old announced in 2022 that he would be taking a step back from acting.
However, fans of the star have just been treated to a first glimpse of the film that brought him out of retirement: Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Carrey is set to reprise his role as Dr Robotnik this Christmas in the latest live-action escapade.
The box-office smash that was 2022's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 raked in a mammoth $405 million globally, with excitement for the third installment now at an all-time high.
Not only will Carrey dazzle audiences as Robotnik but also as the delightfully cheeky Gerald, Robotnik's grandfather, who's hilariously introduced in all his "saggy flesh" at the end of the trailer.
Jubilant YouTube commenters couldn't contain their applause for Carrey's portrayal of the iconic Sega antagonist.
One fan shared: "I love how Jim Carrey said he's retired unless 'a script of gold comes to him'. This must be a script of gold," while another exclaimed: "Jim Carrey playing two roles at once is going to be epic," reports the Mirror.
Another person admitted the footage sent "absolute chills" down their spine, while somebody else shared: "Jim Carrey ALSO playing Gerald Robotnik is an idea I've had in the back of my head since the movie got announced. So glad they are actually doing it!".
"The fact that this franchise started out as an oncoming train wreck and has now turned out to be the most peak set of video game movies in modern time is actually insane," noted another fan.
Back in 2022, Carey said Sonic the Hedgehog 2 would be his last film. He told Hollywood Access at the time: "If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break."

Keanu Reeves stepping into the role of Shadow the Hedgehog has also set tongues wagging among Sonic fans.
Enthusiastic responses have been pouring in, with one fan writing: "Seeing Shadow on the big screen is going to be absolutely insane!". Another noted: "Everything about Shadow is on point. His presentation, his design, his voice, his movements, the use of the hoverboots, the rollerblade run, chaos control, everything, even the dark edgy vibe is present. They couldn't have done it better!".
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is due out in cinemas on December 21.
