BBC star says sport is a 'disappointment' after Euros comment

It looked as though Jermaine Jenas was keen to swiftly move things along on Wednesday night’s The One Show.

The BBC star didn't seem to want to linger anymore on England’s defeat against Spain on Sunday night during the Euro 2024 final.

Joining him in the conversation was co-host Alex Jones and Watchdog star Matt Allwright, who mentioned the loss at the end of his segment.

After prompting viewers to get in touch regarding the issues he had been speaking about, Matt added: “Let’s face it, there’s nothing else going on because the football is over!”

Showing his upset that the sporting event had come to an end, Jermaine replied: “Football is done, it’s all over."

"Don’t need to talk about it anymore," he added, seemingly wanting to avoid ruminating on the defeat.

Matt then added: “They think it’s over, it is all over. Sport is a disappointment.”

The Watchdog star then swiftly changed the topic and music as he highlighted Bruce Springsteen’s performance at Glastonbury and Taylor Swift’s incredible era tour.

Jermaine made his return to the BBC show earlier this week after spending time in Germany to cover the Euros for the broadcaster.

Welcoming him back, on Monday evening, Alex commented: “Look who’s back! I wish there was better news bless you, but it’s really nice to see you.”

He replied: “Thank you, the country is in mourning a little bit today I feel. Not winning the game last night.

“I’ve got to say, the lads, they did us proud. I think when the dust settles and they really look at it. Another final but it wasn't meant to be.

“Who knows, World Cup, we’ve gotta move on to that haven't we?"

On Sunday night, the England squad was up against Spain and sadly missed out on winning the championship, with a score of 2:1 for the opposing team.

Gareth Southgate

Since then, the manager of the England squad Gareth Southgate has confirmed he is resigning.

In a statement, he wrote: “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.

“But it's time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday's final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.

“I joined the FA in 2011, determined to improve English football. In that time, including eight years as England men's manager, I have been supported by some brilliant people who have my heartfelt thanks.

“I could not have had anyone better alongside me than Steve Holland. He is one of the most talented coaches of his generation, and has been immense.”

The One Show continues weeknights on BBC One from 7pm.
