Trailer for second series of Channel 4's Suspect

Psychological drama Suspect is back for series two. The first season aired on Channel 4 two years ago with James Nesbitt at the helm and proved a huge hit among fans.

Series one saw police officer Danny Frater, played by James Nesbitt, try to uncover the truth behind his daughter's death. Viewers were first introduced to Danny in 2022 when he attended what he thought was going to be a routine ID check on a body.

However, Danny received a terrible shock when he pulled back the sheet on the body and realised it was his estranged daughter Christina. He then went on a mission to try and prove that her death wasn't suicide but murder.

In the final episode of series one, Danny deduced that it was pathologist Jackie, played by Joely Richardson, who had killed Christina as she had threatened to expose her for falsifying a past autopsy report. However, with no way to prove Jackie's guilt, Danny stabbed and killed the pathologist with a kitchen knife.

The series ended with Danny in cuffs in the back of a police car, seemingly relieved about avenging his daughter until a hallucination of Christina told him that "nothing was over," before vanishing. While series one followed the story of policeman Danny, season two sees his ex-wife Dr Susannah Newman, played by Anne-Marie Duff, take the lead.

Viewers will be reunited with Susanna in episode one when she comes face-to-face with somebody who confesses, under hypnosis, to murder - and not just a single murder, but multiple murders.

Picking up from where her ex-husband Danny left off, Susannah embarks on a desperate quest to find out the truth about her daughter's death and save a life in the process.

Anne-Marie said of her character: "In the first series of Suspect, the story is carried by Danny Frater (James Nesbitt). He’s investigating the suspicious death of his daughter Christina. Susannah is Christina’s mother and Danny’s ex-wife.

"In the second series, Susannah takes the reins, and we follow her as she continues to try and uncover what happened to her daughter. She is out of her depth as she is not in the police, but a psychotherapist who specialises in hypnotherapy. She is sensitive and intelligent. She’s also a woman who’s swollen with grief."

On how series two links with season one, Anne-Marie added: "It’s definitely a continuation from series one. It expects you to come to the table having known the previous circumstances, but it has a different flavour to series one and a different energy because it’s someone who is outside of the legal system trying to uncover a crime.

"It has a real female energy as it’s about a mother who is trying to reveal the truth. It’s thrilling but also profoundly moving and fascinating."

Director Carolina Giammetta also spoke about the links and differences between the two seasons. She said: "Suspect is an eight-part thriller based on the Danish version Face to Face.

"In this second series, we follow the story of Susannah, who is a psychotherapist and recently lost her daughter - it's undisclosed, whether it was a suicide or a murder. One day a guy comes to her home office to give up smoking and under hypnosis unwittingly declares that tonight he's going to kill someone. So she goes on a mission to try and find him."

Carolina continues: "Series one, followed the story of policeman Danny Frater, who was Susannah's ex-husband, and one night at work he went into a pathologist lab to a report on the death of a girl.

"When he pulled back the sheet on the body, he realised it was his daughter. So he goes on a mission to try and prove that her death wasn't suicide and that it was murder. So it's quite different in that series one was very much about trying to solve a crime where series two is about trying to prevent a crime from happening."

Returning alongside Anne-Marie for series two is Ben Miller, who stars as Richard a Detective Superintendent who was also Danny's boss. James Nesbitt is not expected to return but new cast members include Preacher's Dominic Cooper and Friday Night Dinner star Tamsin Greig. As well as Boiling Point's Vinette Robinson, Ray Donovan's Eddie Marsan, Top Boy actor Nicholas Pinnock, and Bodyguard's Gina McKee.

Suspect starts on Channel 4 on Wednesday, July 17, at 9pm.
