BBC Breakfast star Matt Taylor shared some unexpectedly good news after some had lost all hope of a warm and balmy summer.

Brits had been left baffled after receiving one month's worth of rain in just one week, followed by chilly temperatures and grey skies. However, Matt has since taken to Twitter with some better news.

"Shhhhh. Don’t say it too loudly, but today will be a pleasant summers day for most of us," he teased. "Next few days: Cloud and some rain may affect some north-western areas of the UK, but heat and humidity will build in south and east."

He then dropped the bombshell that the thermometer could climb all the way to 30C by Friday. The celebratory response was clear in the comments, with one follower exclaiming: "At last!"

Others vowed they'd be making the most of the unexpected rise in heat and sitting out in their gardens. However, one cheeky follower made an unexpected association. "Morning! I'm sure it is total coincidence that the weather's improving when @carolkirkwood is away!" the fan quipped, adding a thinking emoji.

Laura Tobin is another metereologist who sought to explain the reason behind the cold summer Brits have shivered through so far.

Over on GMB yesterday, she made the ultimate understatement when she described the season to have been a "cool one so far".

Sympathising with viewers who were becoming tired of reaching for their umbrellas, she then posed the question: "Why?

"It is down to the jet stream. The jet stream divides the cool air to the north and the warm air to the south and at the moment the jet stream is to the south of us, so we're on the cold side of things," she told viewers.

However, she promised: "Later this week, particularly in the south and south-east of England, temperatures are set to rise."

While there could still be more rain to come in the north and Eastern Scotland, she promised "a different story" further south.

The tide is set to turn now, with temperatures "a little higher than average" as Brits head towards the weekend.

That change might not have come in time for Wimbledon revellers, but it's sure to be welcome nevertheless.
