Neal Maupay has already fuelled a rivalry with Everton despite still being on the books of the Premier League outfit.

The Frenchman has gained a reputation for rubbing people up the wrong way, may that be on the pitch or with his social media antics. Last season, the striker enjoyed his fair share on incidents, getting into a war of words with darts star Luke Littler and mocking James Maddison’s celebration.

Maupay’s antics are showing no signs of stopping either, and he has now turned his attention to aggravating Everton. In response to a post revealing that the ex-Brentford star was set to leave the Toffees to join Marseille, the forward responded in typical Maupay fashion.

Fabrizio Romano initially reported that an agreement was in place for the 28-year-old to join the Ligue 1 outfit on a loan-to-buy deal, with Marseille obligated to buy the striker permanently next summer for £4.6million. They may pay a further £2.5m in add-ons as well.

Maupay then responded to the post with an iconic clip from Shawshank Redemption when Andy Dufresne breaks free from prison. Despite the crashing rain and lightning, the character rips off his shirt in relief of getting out, in a pointed message from Maupay.

The former Brighton star has struggled since joining Everton in 2022, making 32 appearances for the club and finding the back of the net on just one occasion. He spent last season on loan with Brentford, where he scored six in 29 appearances.

The tweet certainly suggests that Maupay is relieved to have finally been granted his exit away from Sean Dyche’s side, having clashed with supporters in-person earlier this week.

Following Everton’s defeats to Brighton and Tottenham, players were subjected to abuse from supporters whilst they boarded a train back to Merseyside. Remarks were made about the level of performances as well as their wages, and Maupay was not content with letting the comments pass.

The striker made a comment back under his breath which only fuelled the fire. He took to social media to then criticise those supporters who had waited with the purpose of taking aim at the squad.

He wrote: “Imagine another job where it’s normalised to get abuse like this. Hanging around at a train station to scream at men who are trying their best…”
