Manchester United fans have a reason to feel more positive than ever with Sir Jim Ratciffe's new regime at the top of the club and Erik ten Hag leading a dramatic overhaul of the playing squad.

Four signings have arrived in Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, while Manuel Ugarte's impending £50million transfer will take their summer investment past £200m. But their lavish spending since Erik ten Hag took charge has to be balanced out somewhere, with United chiefs prepared for a summer exodus to fund their new arrivals.

The only players who were considered untouchable by INEOS were Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund, which is unsurprising given their high market value and huge potential, according to The Telegraph.

As for the other 23 players in the squad, including Marcus Rashford, they would be considered fair game in the transfer market if the right offer came along.

The departures of Scott McTominay and Aaron Wan-Bissaka will help boost their coffers, while selling fringe players Facundo Pellistri and Hannibal Mejbri for a combined £15.5m will be highly welcome if it means more signings.

But how will United's squad look after the transfer window shuts at 11pm on August 30?

Express Sport assesses who could arrive and which players could be axed in the coming days.

Goalkeepers

Around 12 months ago, it was all change for United when they spent £47m to bring in Andre Onana from Inter Milan.

After a rocky start, the Cameroonian is a key cog in the United side and seems to have settled into life at Old Trafford. He might have been up for sale in April, but Onana is one of the first names on the teamsheet without much of a doubt.

The club also signed Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce for £5m and he is a respected No. 2, while the experienced Tom Heaton provides much-needed wisdom for the other goalkeepers to bounce off.

Defenders

With three new defenders arriving in Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Leny Yoro, it is safe to say United's backline is now in the best shape it has been for years.

With two right-backs and left-backs on either side, and four central defenders, Ten Hag can hopefully avoid the same injury crisis that engulfed his squad last season, which saw Casemiro and Jonny Evans paired as a centre-back partnership.

Victor Lindelof is expected to seal a cut-price move to Italy with only 10 months left on his deal, while Tyrell Malacia could be forced out if United sign Ben Chilwell from Chelsea after opening talks over the 27-year-old.

Midfielders

With Mainoo indispensable and Bruno Fernandes signing a new contract, it would have been a nervy summer for United's midfielders had the club not spent so vastly on remodelling the backline. Casemiro is 32 and on the wane, so Ten Hag has sought to bring in Ugarte from PSG to add some steel to their central midfield.

As it has been well-documented over the past seven days, Scott McTominay is waiting for clearance before signing for Napoli for £25m. His sale will go some way towards funding Ugarte's deal, meaning it will be a case of one in, one out for United.

Christian Eriksen remains involved in the team as a backup option, but the Dane is unlikely to sign a new contract when his deal expires in June 2025 and if an offer comes in for the playmaker, he could be allowed to leave.

Forwards

Ten Hag bought Hojlund in the summer of 2023 and after struggling at the start, the Dane found his feet in front of goal. This year, their £42m signing Joshua Zirkzee needed no time at all to make a name for himself after scoring the winner against Fulham on the opening day.

But there is a feeling Ten Hag is still keen for another striker with fitness concerns over Hojlund and Zirkzee still adjusting to life in the Premier League. A £40m deal for Ivan Toney cannot be ruled out, even so late in the window, and the 28-year-old would provide that aerial threat United have lacked in recent years.

What's more, Jadon Sancho's exit could actually lead to Raheem Sterling making a previously unimaginable move to Old Trafford given his past ties with Liverpool and Manchester United. Sancho's high wages and expensive fee has been weighing down on United for two years now, and they would do well to offload him permanently.

A large section of the fanbase would like to see Antony sold too, but the £85m man has Ten Hag on his side as he waits patiently for another first-team chance.
