Barry McGuigan's daughter Danika's final on-screen moment before her death at just 33

The nation was moved to tears on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! as Barry McGuigan shared his heartbreak over the loss of his daughter, Danika McGuigan, who tragically died at just 33 years old.

Affectionately known as Nika by her father, she died in 2019 mere weeks after a bowel cancer diagnosis. The sight of Barry breaking down in tears as he recounted memories of Nika prompted an outpouring of emotion from fellow campmates, and even host Ant McPartlin admitted to shedding tears during the emotional segment.

Nika bravely battled leukaemia at the tender age of 11, eventually overcoming the disease following intensive treatment at St. Bartholomew's hospital in London, which necessitated a two-year hiatus from her private schooling.

With aspirations of stardom, Nika embarked on her acting journey with a minor role as "Barmaid" in 2000, while still in her teens.

She honed her craft with professional training and relocated from Dublin to London in 2013, determined to realise her cinematic dreams, reports the Mirror.

In what would be her final film role, Nika shone alongside Nora-Jane Noone, portraying sisters grappling with dark family secrets.

The thriller garnered acclaim at its Toronto International Film Festival premiere in 2020, a poignant success that Nika herself would never witness.

Nika tragically died just months before the film's premiere, missing out on seeing it win the IWC Schaffhausen Filmmaker Bursary Award at the BFI London Film Festival. She was posthumously recognised with the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her outstanding performance in the movie.

In a heart-wrenching revelation, Barry shared that Nika never thought she would fall ill again and was fully committed to her acting career.

In a 2005 interview with the Sunday Times, Barry revealed that Danika "said she wouldn't get sick again. She just got on with her life".

He continued: "She found a love of drama and is now at acting school in Dublin. The word 'dynamo' doesn't do her justice. With Danika the glass is never half-empty and never half-full. It's completely full. In fact, it's probably spilling over."

Reflecting on his daughter's promising future, Barry confessed to his I'm a Celeb co-stars that her loss has profoundly affected him.

"I used to go to church a lot but after my daughter... you know, not so much," he admitted to BBC Radio 1 star Dean McCullough.

Barry and his wife Sandra are proud parents to three sons, Shane, Jake, and Blain, in addition to their daughter Danika. Following Barry's touching moment on I'm a Celebrity, son Shane expressed gratitude towards the show's cast for their support of his father, taking to Instagram to say: "Thank you to all the other campmates supporting dad. We appreciate it immensely."
