A star of beloved 1990s ITV gameshow Fun House now works in Wetherspoons after ditching fame.

Melanie Grant, now 51, was one half of the twin blond cheerleaders who helped host Pat Sharp on the programme.

The quirky quiz show was renowned more for its chaotic go-kart races and deluges of gunge than for its trivia questions. But fans who were children at the time may now as adults enjoy a nostalgic surprise on entering the UK's largest Wetherspoons.

Melanie says her boss at the Royal Victoria Pavilion pub in Ramsgate, Kent, was utterly in awe upon realising her identity from her CV.

She said: "I love working at the pub. It's perfect for me as I grew up around here and I'm a real people person and always love a chat with the customers here.

"A lot of customers know me and recognise me from the show, and we have a lot of laughs and memories about it."

Before transforming into Wetherspoons' flagship – the country's largest which opened its doors back in 2017 – the spot had a vibrant past as a nightclub, known to many as Peggy Sue's and then Nero's.

Local girl Melanie went on: "I used to come here in those days, so I have a great connection with the building."

Pub boss Chris Whitbourn said: "To have Mel here is superb. I used to watch Fun House as a kid and then found myself interviewing her for a job here. She is a great staff member and an asset to the pub."

Melanie and her twin sister Martina soared to stardom on the fondly-remembered ITV show at the tender age of 16.

The iconic programme, which featured young contestants undertaking challenges in the notorious soft playhouse amid the enthusiastic hosting of former BBC Radio 1 DJ Pat Sharp – with his distinctive mullet – captivated young audiences from 1989 to 1999.
