A Very Royal Scandal drops on Amazon Prime Video this week, providing brand-new insights into Prince Andrew’s infamous Newsnight interview.

It comes after Netflix’s Scoop, which aired just five months ago back in April, told the same story but from the perspective of former BBC producer Sam McAlister.

The three-part drama will examine the BBC interview from a different angle, with legendary interviewer Emily Maitlis taking on an executive producer role.

The drama boasts a star-studded cast, with esteemed character actor Michael Sheen completely transforming for the role of disgraced royal Prince Andrew.

Who stars in the cast of A Very Royal Scandal?

The Affair’s Ruth Wilson plays former BBC journalist Emily Maitlist, while Good Omens actor Michael Sheen portrays Prince Andrew.

The Duke of York's former private secretary Amanda Thirsk will be played by The Thick of It’s Joanna Scanlan.

Meanwhile, the late Queen's private secretary Sir Edward Young will be brought to life by Alex Jennings, who previously starred opposite Helen Mirren as Prince Charles in 2006’s The Queen.

Stewart Maclean, who was deputy editor on Newsnight when Prince Andrew's bombshell interview aired in November 2019, will be played by The Sixth Commandment’s Éanna Hardwicke.

Additionally, Prince Andrew’s ex-wife Sarah Ferguson will be portrayed by Claire Rushbrook, who is best known for her role as Roxanne in the 1996 film, Secrets & Lies.

Notably missing from the top-billed line-up is Sam McAlister, the producer apparently responsible for securing the Newsnight interview.

The former BBC producer will reportedly be played by Downton Abbey star Clare Calbraith in Amazon Prime’s take on the scandal.

Additionally, the Amazon Prime series has been directed by Julian Jarrold and written by Jeremy Brock, while Emily serves as an executive producer alongside Julian, Jeremy, Karen Thrussell, Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin and Diarmuid McKeown.

Who played the same characters in Netflix’s Scoop?

Netflix’s Scoop centred around Sam McAlister, as the story is told from her perspective, and she was played by Doctor Who actress Billie Piper.

Prince Andrew was portrayed by A Knight’s Tale’s Rufus Sewell, while Sex Education star Gillian Anderson acted as Emily.

Ashes to Ashes actress Keeley Hawes starred as Amanda Thirsk, while The Windsors actor Richard Goulding appeared as Stewart MacLean.

Other important cast members included Atonement’s Romola Garai, who played former BBC Newsnight editor Esme Wren, and The Great’s Charity Wakefield, who starred as Princess Beatrice.

What is A Very Royal Scandal about and when does it air?

A Very Royal Scandal is set to “demonstrate the power of journalism through a pivotal moment in British history”.

The series will depict Emily’s headline-making Newsnight interview with disgraced royal Prince Andrew over his friendship with paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

A Very Royal Scandal is the latest in Amazon’s Scandal series, which it has previously co-produced with the BBC.

However, unlike with A Very British Scandal and A Very English Scandal, the BBC is not involved with the Prince Andrew project.

All three episodes of A Very Royal Scandal are set to premiere this Thursday, September 19 exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
