BBC announces Daddy Issues is returning for second series with new characters teased

After the first series of sitcom Daddy Issues aired on BBC Three in August this year, the broadcaster has announced that it's been commissioned for a second series. The show followed a pregnant party girl and her recently divorced father as they ended up in a flat-share situation in Stockport.

Sex Education star Aimee Lou Wood played Gemma while David Morrissey portrayed her father Malcolm in the series. Announcing the second instalment, Jon Petrie, director of BBC comedy said: "We’re delighted to play midwife to a second series of 'Daddy Issues'.

"Danielle Ward’s razor sharp scripts and the dream pairing of Aimee Lou Wood and David Morrissey have struck a chord with viewers and we can’t wait to see Gemma and Malcolm take the first steps on their parenting/grand-parenting journey."

The last episode of the series ended with Gemma going into labour and giving birth to her baby daughter Sadie, with Malcolm rushing to try and make it to the hospital in time.

Now the BBC have teased that "a face from the past could change everything for them". Writer Danielle Ward expressed: "I’m thrilled to be writing for Aimee and David (and the rest of this fabulous cast) again. I love the Moscrips and can’t wait to crack on with their continuing adventures. Sure a bit of a break would be nice but my hair will grow back, right?"

Meanwhile, actress Aimee Lou said the show was "the most fun she's ever had on a job," and she "can't wait to do it again."

David added: "I’m delighted to be doing another series of 'Daddy Issues. Working with Aimee was a dream, and Danielle’s writing is so funny and heartwarming! Can’t wait!"

Aside from Aimee Lou and David, the sitcom features an ensemble cast including Susan Lynch as Davina, David Fynn as Derek, Sharon Rooney as Catherine and Sarah Hadland as Rita.

After the news was announced, fans flocked to social media to share their excitement about a second series.

One viewer expressed: "Amazing news today... welcome a new BBC franchise. Malcolm and Gemma deserved a second season. Now the real adventure begins for the two of them.

"Malcolm deserved to be happy after the last scene with his ex-wife and Gemma, a new love in life. Brilliant news - I can't wait for this next year!"

Another person commented: "Yes! I was dying for this!," while a third enthused: "Congratulations! It's a series 2 renewal!"

Daddy Issues series one is available to watch on BBC iPlayer now. A release date for series two is yet to be revealed.
