Singer Toyah Willcox has revealed she will "channel my inner Ann Widdecombe" as she joins the star-studded line-up for Strictly Come Dancing's 20th anniversary series.

The punk rock legend, who led the band Toyah from 1977 to 1983 before embarking on a solo career, expressed her admiration for the former Tory MP's "strength of personality".

Ahead of the launch episode this weekend, Willcox shared: "Ann Widdecombe, I loved her strength of personality, her conviction, her self-confidence."

She added: "I mean, that's a real focus point for me. If I'm feeling I can't do something, I just channel my inner Ann Widdecombe."

Despite drawing inspiration from Widdecombe's humorous performances, Willcox assured fans that some of her dances would "flow like water". The singer, married to King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp, enthused: "I love the idea of dancing. I think dancing is one of the most extraordinary things about being a human being."

She also expressed her anticipation for the "I'm looking forward to the flowing movement of dance. There are certain dances that flow like water and I'm really looking forward to that."

Acknowledging the challenges ahead due to her age, she remained confident, stating: "The more frenetic stuff is going to be quite challenging, just because of my age, but I know I can do it."

The much-anticipated 22nd series of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing is set to premiere at 7.20pm on Saturday, September 14, amidst a whirlwind of controversy surrounding the treatment of its contestants.

A BBC inquiry has been put into motion following claims levelled against Giovanni Pernice by former Strictly star Amanda Abbington, with the findings still under wraps.

Abbington has come forward as the initial voice to condemn "inappropriate" conduct on the show and described enduring a "toxic environment" during her stint with Pernice.

Pernice, however, has dismissed these accusations.

In light of the recent strife, his co-star Graziano Di Prima has also decided to exit the dance spectacle.
