GMB: Russia expel six British diplomats in Moscow

Kate Garraway interrupted Good Morning Britain with a breaking news announcement on Friday. She began: "Breaking news. Well, in the last hour, it's emerged that six British diplomats in Moscow have been expelled after being accused of spying and sabotage by the Russian security service, the FSB."

Rob Rinder continued: "It comes after Vladimir Putin warned Russia would be at war with NATO if the West allowed long-range missiles to strike targets inside his country.

"Sir Keir Starmer will discuss the escalating situation with the US President, Joe Biden at the White House today, and our North America correspondent Noel Phillips is in Washington."

Turning to their co-star, Rob went on: "Noel Phillips, relations between Britain and Russia have sunk, to say the least, right now to an all-time low, correct?"

Noel replied: "Now, Rob and Kate, I think the timing of those comments from the Prime Minister rebuking President Putin's threat and essentially, urging him to back down, appears to have dramatically escalated tension."

Explaining further, Noel continued: "These comments are always unsettling to hear, world leaders going back and forth with such warnings.

"But these comments from Sir Keir Starmer really is a direct message to Moscow that their threats of escalating this two-year-long conflict would be a huge miscalculation.

"Now this will be the Prime Minister's second meeting with Joe Biden, and as you say, we're expecting the two men to focus primarily on long-term strategy when it comes to defeating President Putin, as well as military aid.

"But let's not forget, these talks come at a time when the President himself is on his way out of office, and ahead of November's election, which could upend US foreign policy on Ukraine."

He added: "So this is all about Starmer taking to the world stage to lay a framework should there be a change in government in this country."

Elsewhere in the show, Kate opened up about her health during a chat with Rob and entertainment reporter Richard Arnold.

Richard shared some Strictly Come Dancing news before Kate chimed in: "Can I just mention that I have changed my thyroid medication and everything is slightly surreal and you're not helping."

Richard was left open-mouthed as he replied: "Right...we have worked together for 24 years, I have never helped, you have always got your fingers on the edge of the cliff."

"Have you really changed your meds?" he asked as Kate went on: "I feel a bit odd, I confess that now."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
