NTAs 2024: Kate Garraway collects award

Kate Garraway was moved to tears at the National Television Awards on Wednesday night as she accepted an award for her poignant documentary about her late husband Derek Draper, with their two children by her side.

In a touching family moment that warmed the hearts of viewers, Kate's teenage daughter Darcey was seen making a tender gesture towards her younger brother Billy. The glitzy ceremony took an emotional turn when their mother won the award for Best Authored Documentary.

Darcey, 18, who tragically lost her father Derek Draper earlier this year, was spotted comforting her 15 year old brother at London's O2 Arena.

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate, 57, delivered a tearful speech after winning the award for her heart-wrenching documentary detailing the struggles of caring for her late husband Derek, who passed away following a four-year battle with complications from Covid.

Upon the announcement that Derek's Story - a documentary chronicling the final year of their father's life - had won the award for Best Authored Documentary, the cameras panned to siblings Darcey and Billy. They were beaming with pride as their mother rose to accept the award.

Viewers then observed Darcey gently rubbing her younger brother's shoulders as he was overwhelmed with emotion during the poignant moment, reports the Mirror.

Kate Garraway touched the hearts of the nation with her poignant tribute as she accepted her award, leaving many in tears. She dedicated the honour to her late husband and the unsung carers across the UK, highlighting the often overlooked dedication they show in caring for their loved ones a role she embraced during Derek's final year.

In an emotional address, Kate shared: "This is a bittersweet one isn't it? It's very bitter to be here, with the gorgeous Darcey and Billy. I promised them they didn't have to say anything. We're halfway through the first year of firsts really. A first Easter and first birthday, without Derek. It's so strange to be here for the first Television Awards without him."

The evening also saw Kate's children, Darcey and Billy, accompanying their mother on the red carpet. Darcey turned heads in an elegant polka dot gown, while Billy looked sharp in his black tuxedo.

Social media users, on the platform formerly known as Twitter, were quick to express their admiration for Darcey after her red carpet appearance.

One user praised: "Kate Garraway's daughter is so beautiful and so strong already. She is going to grow into an incredible young woman," Another added: "Wow! Darcey Draper is stunning. Her dad would be so proud of her."

Another comment highlighted the resilience of Kate's children: "Those two kids have been through so much. They've not only lost their father, but they've lost him in front of the whole world. They are both a credit to Kate and of course, their late dad Derek."

Kate Garraway has delivered a poignant tribute to her husband Derek on what would have been their 20th wedding anniversary, sharing an emotional video with her 1.3million Instagram followers. The National Television Awards winner reflected on the significance of the day, expressing her feelings about Derek's absence due to his long-term health battle following COVID-19.

"Today would've been my 20th wedding anniversary to Derek. I mean, it still is my 20th wedding anniversary to Derek, it's just one of those days, that we've talked about, like Christmas to come, Easter. All of those things - his birthday - where you really feel a punch to the stomach."

"This one, particularly, I've been feeling really sorry for myself, I'm afraid, because it's such a personal thing. The others are as much, when he was here, made about the family, friends, all of that, whereas this day is so particularly special to him and I. The fact that he's not here makes me feel very sad and notice his absence like a roaring, roaring train."

She continued: "I've been leaning into the grief, as everyone says you have to, and I've been re-reading some of his lovely anniversary messages on previous cards which I feel so grateful to have had that kind of romance and love in my life. I'm so lucky."
