Alex Armstrong reveals book release clashes with Richard Osman's

Fans of the hit BBC quiz show Pointless are in for a treat as Alexander Armstrong reveals an intriguing rivalry with his former co-star Richard Osman.

During his chat on ITV's Lorraine, aired Thursday (September 12), the much-loved 54-year-old presenter opened up while promoting his freshly-minted page-turner for the younger crowd, Evenfall - The Golden Linnet.

The tale is being touted as a soon-to-be classic for 9 to 12-year-olds, weaving a rich tapestry of adventure, mystical enchantments, shadowy sects, and more.

Yet, it's not just children's imaginations that Evenfall will be battling for, Armstrong's literary debut is set to go toe-to-toe with fellow Pointless sage Richard Osman's latest work, We Solve Murders. As both books are slated to hit the shelves on the same day.

Television icon Lorraine Kelly broke the news of this playful face-off, remarking: "Alexander Armstrong releasing his first ever children's book. It's called Evenfall- The Golden Linnet and he joins me now."

She went on to point out the calendar clash: "And Alexander it's coming out the same day as Richard Osman's. It's not good timing," reports the Mirror.

To which Armstrong retorted with a blend of humility and humour: "Well, I don't know." He continued by praising his long-time Pointless ally for his continuous support. "I mean Richard has been there as a real guiding light the whole way through. He's been such a help and support," he confessed.

The duo, lauded for their on-screen chemistry, were virtually inseparable on Pointless with Armstrong at the helm and his trusty sidekick Osman delivering a steady stream of trivia and answers. Their rapport won over audiences nationwide, making the showdown of their literary endeavours all the more enticing for fans.

Richard was a staple of the Pointless ensemble since its inception in 2009, but chose to retire his role in 2022.

He shared with his followers: "Pointless has been a joy from start to finish, working alongside my friend Alexander Armstrong, backed by the most wonderful team, and for the best viewers in the world. I will miss everyone so much, but I'm thrilled that I'll still be presenting the celebrity shows. I can't thank everyone enough for 12 amazing years."

In earlier tweets, Richard hinted that his exit was partially due to the phenomenal success of his chart-topping crime novels, The Thursday Murder Club and The Man Who Died Twice. It was also revealed that the film rights for the former were snapped up by Steven Spielberg's production house, Amblin Entertainment.

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV1.
