BBC Breakfast: Mother of Keaton Slater gets emotional during interview

The mother of Keaton Slater got emotional as she opened up about her son's tragic death on BBC Breakfast today.

Louise Slater, Keaton's mum, is fighting for justice after her 12-year-old son was tragically killed in a hit and run. Three months ago, Keaton from Coventry was hit by a BMW as he headed home from school and the driver fled the scene.

The suspect was named by police as Dolars Aleksanders soon after the collision and now the 21-year-old is wanted on the suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. However, Dolars is thought to be in Latvia.

Speaking about losing her son on BBC Breakfast today, Louise choked up as she sat alongside her partner and was comforted by Nina Warhurst as she begged for justice for her son.

She said: "Every time we grieve, we get angry because it's only round the corner from us aswell. We go down there to just have that reflection time just to try and say to him that we're gonna get justice for him. It's going to happen to other families and they have to go through this nightmare." She choked up as photos of Keaton were shown on screen.

Nina could be heard saying to Louise: "You're doing great," as she went on to explain how her kids were taking it all. She said it had brought them all closer as a family and her kids now have a 'life is short' motto.

In a previous interview last week, Louise admitted she was "deflated" by the news that Aleksanders had returned to Latvia.

She told ITV News: "When it first happened the police told us they'd informed all the airports so he (the suspect) couldn't leave the country but then we found out he was abroad and felt defeated.

"So that's when we decided we're going to do things off our own back to try to push things forward and that's why we need the petition signed. I only thought we'd get about 10,000 (signatures) but it's gone up to 60,000 at the moment."

Louise explained how she and her husband Clint headed to the memorial every Friday at 4.30pm to pay tribute to their son.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We're actively pursuing strong lines of inquiry in relation to the whereabouts of Dolars Aleksanders. Our focus remains on getting justice for Keaton and his family as soon as we possibly can. We're continuing to progress the investigation by collecting as much evidence as possible, so we build a clear picture around the tragic events."

*BBC Breakfast airs at 6am on BBC One.
