Happy Valley: Tommy Lee Royce runs over police officer

The town where Happy Valley was filmed is soon set to be turned into a TV studio once more - with locals fuming about the news.

The BBC cop drama, which starred Sarah Lancashire and James Norton, was a huge hit with TV critics and pulled in 7.5million viewers for its final episode. The success of the show caused the town of Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire to become a "global appeal".

Those who call the market town home claim to have spotted an uptick in stag dos and hen parties and alcohol-related violence since Happy Valley was filmed there. And now they fear that things will only go from bad to worse as the show's creator, Sally Wainwright, plans to return to film her new series, Riot Women.

A local shopkeeper told the Daily Mail: "What inflames the matter are emails and letters from the production company with statements such as, 'Filming of this nature serves to bolster Hebden Bridge’s global appeal as a front-running tourist destination.'

"But the only businesses that are really benefitting are the pubs. Violence, drugs, and drinking is the reality."

Locals have claimed that roads in Hebden Bridge have closed while filming takes place, and accused shows like Happy Valley of making the town look like a "dystopian hellhole".

On the other hand, some residents have said that the town is "vibrant" since filming in the area.

One local said: "Those who oppose the filming are a very vocal raging minority of people who have never left the town since they were born and would much rather see it as a stricken Northern wasteland than the vibrant place it now is."

Riot Women will follow the story of five women who start a punk rock band and enter a regional competition, only to find out that the world of punk is more than they signed up for.

Of the new show's key characters, she explained: "They're angry, and they're going to sing about being angry and being of a certain age and all the stuff that goes with being of a certain age and having to go through the menopause at the same time.

"They form a punk rock band to sing about what they're angry about. It's just me letting rip, really! We've got a song about HRT called Seeing Red. I've had a lot of fun writing it."
