BBC Gardeners' World viewers hit out just minutes into Friday’s episode (August 25). Green-fingered fans tuned into the popular BBC Two show to get their latest dose of gardening tips from host Monty Don.

As the show began delving deeper into different landscapes and flower beds, fans claimed some of the show's garden suggestions were "outrageous" and far too costly.

Viewers reacted on X as one said: “The budget for this garden must have been what it costs to build most people's houses. And those tree ferns will need to be kept wet with a hosepipe. It's very beautiful. But is it just me? I find this rather depressing.”

Another griped: “The amount of money required to do half of this stuff is outrageous. Show something more realistic and practical please BBC.”

A third penned: “I do love a green garden but the sheer amount of money that one must have cost makes me feel sad,” while a fourth added: “They need to show more small, real gardens, like Frances Tophill’s. And more practical gardening instead of show gardens.”

More chimed in, blasting: “I wonder how much that all cost” and “Great London garden. Can't help but always think a garden that size is probably worth more than my house and 2 acre plot where I live.”

In this episode, Monty Don got ahead of the game by planting foxtail lilies for next year and dealt with winter salads that were ready to be planted.

He also tackled a tricky problem with fuchsia gall mites in the greenhouse. Meanwhile, Rachel de Thame dove into the fascinating world of bees and how they help with pollination.

Arit Anderson explored a lush green space in the middle of London, and we met a gardener in Ross-on-Wye who worked wonders on a sloped garden despite living with osteoarthritis, along with a couple in Shropshire who had fallen in love with daylilies.

Monty Don, the beloved gardening expert, initially didn't have his heart set on horticulture but experienced an "ecstatic moment" while sowing carrots that would eventually lead him to a flourishing career at the BBC.

Having hosted various programmes on both the BBC and Channel 4, Monty took over as the face of Gardeners' World in 2003, stepping into the shoes of the much-admired Alan Titchmarsh.
