Viewers are eagerly anticipating the return of the acclaimed ITV drama The Tower, as hints about its future have been dropped ahead of the third series. The riveting ITV crime thriller, known for featuring Game of Thrones star Gemma Whelan, 43, is set to return for a third instalment after previously captivating audiences with two successful series.

Whelan, famed for her portrayal of Yara Greyjoy in the HBO phenomenon, will once more step into the shoes of DS Sarah Collins.

The character has been missing from screens since 2023, following a sensational delve into a chilling cold case during the second series of the hard-hitting police drama. This saw DS Collins clashing once again with PC Lizzie Adama, played by Tahirah Sharif, as adherence to procedure was gravely challenged.

In what is sure to be another thrilling ride, the upcoming series will follow DS Collins as she investigates the stabbing of a teenage boy.

Titled The Tower 3: Gallowstree Lane, this latest installment is grounded in the narrative of Kate London's third novel, adapted for the small screen by award-winning scriptwriter Patrick Harbinson, known for his work on Homeland, Fearless and 24. Despite series three yet to hit our screens, conversations around a potentially explosive fourth series have already commenced, reports the Mirror.

During a press event, writer and executive producer Harbinson tantalisingly hinted at what lay in store for fans of The Tower. He disclosed that he had already penned the first episode of a potential fourth series, telling reporters: "Absolutely, I'm already writing the first episode of The Tower four just to show ITV that we're ready to go", emphasising the wealth of thrilling narratives still to explore and expressing his wish to extend the series further.

Whelan couldn't contain her enthusiasm about the possibility of returning as Sarah in the fourth series, saying: "Yes please!" and elaborating with excitement: "I think everyone's so keen, we're all so keen, I'm trying to send all the thoughts to ITV and all the people to tune in."

At the same event, Harbinson hinted at what's to come for the show, revealing that he has already penned the first episode of the fourth series. He expressed his eagerness: "Absolutely, I'm already writing the first episode of The Tower four just to show ITV that we're ready to go" and mentioned there are plenty more captivating stories to tell, expressing his desire to continue the series.

Previously, when the third series was greenlit, Harbinson had shared his excitement: "We're delighted to be filming a third series of The Tower. Damien and I are very grateful to Polly Hill and ITV for the early commission. Gallowstree Lane has a high-stakes drugs and gangs storyline with Jimmy and Emmett's characters taking major roles. Sarah and Lizzie have gripping and heart-breaking stories too, as the drama of Portland Tower comes full circle. I firmly believe series three will be our best yet."

Joining the HBO star in the upcoming series will be Tahirah Sharif, who received a BAFTA nomination for her portrayal of PC Lizzie Adama in the first series, alongside Jimmy Akingbola returning as DC Steve Bradshaw, and Emmett J Scanlan reprising his role as DI Kieran Shaw.
