Homes Under the Hammer: Martin left in shock at the state of a house

A Homes Under The Hammer star was left “speechless” after paying well over the asking price for a fire-ravaged property without a roof. The BBC show saw Jas and her husband blindly purchasing a house from an auction before completely gutting it on a £30,000 budget.

On a recently re-broadcasted episode of Homes Under The Hammer, Martin Roberts, 61, travelled to Burton-on-Trent. There, he visited a two-bedroom, mid-terraced house with a guide price of £25,000.

“It’s pretty much good too to be true, but in this particular instance, it hasn’t got something you take for granted,” Martin began. The camera then panned to the property and it was revealed there was no intact roof.

During his walk around, Martin revealed the Staffordshire building had suffered from significant fire damage. But that didn’t stop Jas and Harpreet from snagging the property at auction.

The Leicestershire-based couple paid £67,000 for the home but later confessed they’d gone in blind and were left “speechless” after viewing the property. “You’ve bought this house? Bit of a challenge on your hands there?,” began Martin.

“We were told there was a property going to auction, starting bid was fairly low at £25k and we thought ‘yeah, it might be good’,” explained the screen printer.

“But it turned out a little bit higher than expected. But we were in there and we weren’t going to let go. We hadn’t seen the property before.”

After a successful auction, Jas claimed she and her husband came to look at the blaze-ravaged property from the outside.

“We knew it was fire-damaged,” she explained. “But we didn’t know how far it was damaged.”

“So having seen [the property] now, how do you feel?” queried Martin. “Speechless but we have to grow up and start working on it,” she answered.

Jazz went on to say her first port of call was to install a new roof before revealing she and Harpreet were discussing whether or not to up the property’s value by installing a third bedroom.

Initially, she claimed they possessed a budget of £30,000 and that they expected work to be completed within four months.

But five months later, Homes Under The Hammer returned to catch up with Jas and revealed work on the project had slowed.

The buyer explained building had been delayed due to contractor woes and building surveyors operating on their own timeline.

However, after eventually being given the green light, Jas confirmed work was full steam ahead.

“At the moment, we’ve spent £18,000 on it already, but our budget was £25,000 originally,” she explained.

“So considering we’ve still got the wiring, the plastering, the bathroom and the kitchen and the second floor to do so, it all depends on what’s the budget left afterwards.”

Later on in the programme, it was revealed the couple’s property had finally been completed, eight months later than initially planned.

The pair were also unable to stick to their original £30,000 budget and claimed it had already “doubled”.

“It’s a good learning point and experience,” claimed Jazz “I don’t think I have the heart to sell it now. It just looks to good to give it away to somebody else.”
