BBC Breakfast: Sally tells Ben he needs to 'get out more'

The atmosphere in the BBC Breakfast studio turned frosty as one Strictly Come Dancing star told presenter Ben Thompson: “I don’t know if I want to talk to you again”.

Vito Coppola was sitting on the famous red sofa with Ben and co-presenter Sally Nugent on Monday (August 19) to discuss his experience on Celebrity MasterChef under judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace.

But things turned awkward as he discussed traditional Italian dishes – and how the British ruin them – with Ben.

Ben started things off by quizzing Vito: “We Brits love Italian food, but it’s probably not that authentic sometimes. There’s quite a lot of British crimes against Italian food. So go on, what’s the worst?”

Vito replied: “The worst is between the cream in the carbonara and the pineapple on the pizza. Maybe it’s pineapple on pizza.” But Ben appeared offended as he replied: “I love pineapple on pizza!”

Even his co-host Sally was against him as she chimed in: “You don’t!” – and Vito was on it as he said: “No! You eat the pineapple on the pizza? I don’t know if I want to talk to you again.”

Ben insisted: “Ham and pineapple pizza? It’s amazing!” But Vito had a rational explanation as he said: “You know why? Because pizza is pizza. You know what I mean? I don’t put chocolate cream on fish and chips, I don’t do that! So why do we have to put pineapple on the pizza? It’s so beautiful with the sauce, the tomato and the mozzarella.”

Ben said: “It’s just a little bit sweet!” causing Vito to clasp his hands together in a begging position as he asked: “Why? Why? I’m almost crying because of this.”

Vito went on to address the recent Strictly scandal, admitting the pros and dancers are like a "big family" who "support each other".

He said: "We always have this mentality of seeing the glass half full and seeing the positive things. This year is going to be a beautiful year because it's the 20th anniversary of Strictly."

The professional dancer added: "Every year I say, 'This is the best year'. And the next year there is something even better! It's so surprising, something you don't expect."

Vito promised "surprises" coming up on the show – but seemingly avoided answering anything on the allegations that caused both Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima to exit the show. Giovanni vehemently denies the allegations against him.

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
