AR: Guest is told their painting is a copy
During the latest episode of Antiques Roadshow, one guest was left feeling disappointed after expert Alexandra Gill explained her family painting was a "copy" and not the real thing.
"I have to ask, how did you come by the portrait of Sulky?" the expert inquired.
The guest explained: "My parents bought him from a Cirencester car-boot sale in the late 80s because my dad thought that Sulky looked like his dad, it's been in our house ever since."
"And do you remember your grandfather?" Alexandra went on to ask.
“Yeah I do," said the guest, as Alexandra continued: "And would this remind you of him?" as the guest joked: “Yes. He could definitely get a sulk on!"

"Well the original is a drawing by Gerald W Tooby," the expert explained before breaking the news it was a fake. "But sadly this is a copy of the drawing."
The guest's face dropped as she simply replied: "Oh right!"
“One of the reasons you can tell that it is a copy is because it's got very sharp edges," Alexandra went on.
“And if you look very, very closely, you can see it's pixelated, so you can see very, very small dots as the image is made up, which is another indication that it's a copy."
“It does have Gerard Tooby's signature on it, in ballpoint, so that's always quite fun to have. It means that he knew about it," the Antiques Roadshow star said sharing the positives of the painting.
"Can I ask how much you paid for it?" she quizzed.
The guest laughed: "Approximately 70p,” as Alexandra gave a sigh of relief, exclaiming: “Well, I'm delighted to say you probably doubled your money."
"Right well, okay," said the disappointed guest. She added: "Better than nothing!"
Elsewhere in the show, John Benjamin valued a necklace made from some of the largest pieces of Baltic amber he'd ever seen.
Jon Baddeley also admired a humble compass once owned by local man Edgar Evans, who was part of Scott's ill-fated Antarctic expedition and one of the first of the party to lose his life on the ice.
