All Creatures Great and Small's Nicholas Ralph on animal co-stars
All Creatures Great and Small was revived back in 2020, airing on Channel 5 to provide some escapism during the coronavirus lockdowns. The family-friendly drama is set in the 1930s in Yorkshire and is based on the series of books written by vet Alf Wight.
Writing under the pen name James Herriot, his books tell stories inspired by his real-life experiences as a countryside vet. The new adaptation, which is due to hit Netflix on August 14, follows the previous BBC series of the same name that aired back in the late 70s.
The first season of the drama is made up of six episodes and a Christmas special and was filmed in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the publication of the first book in the James Herriot series. In February 2024, the show was renewed for a fifth and sixth season.
While fans eagerly await the release of season five of All Creatures, it has been revealed that the first season will become available on Netflix later this week. Viewers will see Nicholas Ralph in the role of James Herriot and Samuel West playing his boss, Siegfried Farnon.

Viewers in the UK will be pleased to hear all of the episodes will be available to watch in one go as the whole season arrives on Netflix at the same time.
New Netflix TV series mostly release at 8am local time in the UK and Ireland, and this will continue to be the case for All Creatures Great and Small.
Unfortunately for fans in the US, who usually watch the series on PBS, the show does not seem to be landing on Netflix in America just yet.

Season one was filmed in the Yorkshire Dales, particularly around Nidderdale and the village of Grassington was used for the fictional village of Darrowby.
The stars love spending so much time around animals, however, James Herriot star Nicholas Ralph previously spoke to Express.co.uk about how a "runaway" co-star "kicked off".
He said: "You had these animal wranglers who are, you know, built like barn doors and they are struggling with this cow.
"They were just transferring [it] from one field to another, we weren't filming at that time or anything. The cow just decided to kick off a little bit."
