The Chase: Contestant chooses to take the low offer

The Chase today saw a cautious contestant turn down the lucrative opportunity of winning £50,000 - and Bradley Walsh's shocked face was a picture.

Instead of opting for the higher figure, Lucy chose a more conservative £1,000 offer - and viewers immediately took to social media to complain about what a "dull" episode it was shaping to be. Lucy had opted to avoid any tense nail-biting moments - but that was exactly the reason fans of the show were losing interest.

According to many, the pro singer needed to change her tune - and fast. "Hope you get knocked out coward #thechase," sniped one follower of the ITV show.

"Low - for f***s sake, what’s the f*****g point?!!!" quizzed another. "I’m tempted to go £50k but I’ll go for the lower offer ffs," a third echoed in frustration at the lost opportunity.

A fourth predicted: "This is shaping up nicely to be one of those dull episodes where the chaser will need about 12 to beat them. Just move straight onto the news and give us 30 mins back #thechase." Meanwhile, as some were slamming Lucy going for the low offer, others focused their attention on contestant Chloe's wardrobe choices.

Several fans seemed to be dismayed that she'd opted to go on national television wearing dungarees, as they probed her fashion faux pas.

They added that she had looked "unimpressed" with Lucy's take-up of the low offer, opting not to clap for her.

"Chloe looks hacked off, who can blame her?" one sympathised.

Meanwhile, unlike the singing contestant, Chloe didn't seem to have much of a working knowledge of music.

In one question about Wham, despite George Michael being the obvious answer for many, Chloe declined to answer, declaring: "Pass!"

It had viewers helplessly tearing their hair out at home as they saw her chances slipping away, while Chloe then seemed stunned when Lucy managed to make it through.

Viewers were shocked as another contestant, Darren, was judged to bear more than a passing resemblance to Rolf Harris.

The Chase airs at 5pm on weekdays on ITV.
