BBC Breakfast viewers took to Twitter after Boris Johnson reunited with Donald Trump. The pair's meeting came as they discussed the war in Ukraine, which was featured on the show today.

Viewers tuned into Jon Kay and Nina Warhurst on Wednesday's edition as they all issued a similar complaint. After a photograph circulated showing him giving a speech to a near-empty room at the conference on Tuesday, Mr Johnson later shared an image of himself meeting with Mr Trump, just days after the ex-president survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Back in 2020, Johnson previously took aim at Trump saying: "I think he's portraying a quite stupefying ignorance that makes him frankly unfit to hold the office of the President of the United States." He added that he could introduce his US counterpart to the British capital, but would decide against it.

"I wouldn't want to expose Londoners to any unnecessary risk of meeting Donald Trump!" he exclaimed. However, Boris has since decided to meet with the Republican candidate in Milwaukee, USA, and has praised him for being "on superb form following the appalling attempt on his life".

He wrote after posting a snap from the pair's 30-minute meeting, "I noted the courage, resilience and sheer indomitability with which he has responded." Viewers hit out at BBC Breakfast for showing coverage of "failed" politician Johnson while others hit out at Trump.

Baffled viewers took to the app after seeing the BBC Breakfast footage, with one pointing out: "Boris Johnson: 'Trump is "unfit to hold the office of President of the United States'. Suddenly, Boris Johnson is Trump's best mate. What a slimy hypocrite. #r4today #BBC #bbcqt #bbcnews #bbcpm #bbcbreakfast."

Another hit out, exclaiming: "So the fact that a failed and disgraced former prime minister meets a failed and disgraced presidential candidate is a main news story on #r4today. Anything to promote #trump seems to be the editorial line on the BBC. #bbcbreakfast."

A third added: "Farage will be livid, getting upstaged by yesterday’s man, disgraced ex-MP “Boris”Johnson #bbcbreakfast."

Meanwhile, another Twitter viewer was even less impressed, describing the pair as "two opportunistic narcissists that have damaged politics on both sides of the Atlantic with their toxic and divisive rhetoric".

Someone else exclaimed: "Seeing Farage, Truss and Johnson ingratiating themselves into the Republican Party as loyal UK attachments is utterly nauseating, but oh so predictable. Three vile politicians, pandering to Trump because they have nothing to offer at home."

Another quizzed: "I wonder how President @ZelenskyyUa feels seeing this picture and knowing you are over there with Trump & his VP candidate who hates Ukraine & doesn't want to support them. Hypocrite of the worst order. Not only do you shame our country but you shame Ukraine also."

However, Boris wrote on his Twitter account following the meeting: "Great to meet President Trump who is on top form after the shameful attempt on his life. We discussed Ukraine and I have no doubt that he will be strong and decisive in supporting that country and defending democracy."

Some allies of Ukraine have expressed concern about the prospect of Trump and his right-hand man JD Vance gaining power and what impact it could have on military aid reaching the wartorn country.

Vance claimed in a speech that the USA had been providing "a blanket of security to Europe for far too long”, and that funds Europe had not spent on defence had become “an implied tax on the American people”.

The Conservative Government, on the other hand, when led by Boris Johnson at the time of Putin launching his 2022 invasion, had been viewed as an ally to Ukraine.

Johnson was ousted from his party five months later over growing discontent about how the coronavirus pandemic had been handled.
