Disney+ subscribers fuming as monthly cost to rise to 'more than double' original price

Extraordinary Season 2 trailer streaming on Disney +

Disney+ subscribers have been left fuming after finding out their monthly cost will rise to "more than double" it's original price. US subscribers will see the price hike go into effect on October 17, with the Disney+ basic subscription with ads going from $7.99 to $9.99 a month.

The premium package with no ads will be increasing from $13.99 to $15.99 a month, Variety reports. The ad-free subscription package was $6.99 when the platform first launched in 2019, but now subscribers will have to pay more than double that price at $15.99 a month.

The last price hike occurred back in October 2023 in the US which was followed suit with a price increase in the UK also, meaning British subscribers could be getting yet another hike soon.

After finding out they'll have to pay even more to watch their favourite shows and films on the streaming platform, subscribers have taken to social media to share their frustrations.

One annoyed person took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express: "Never in my life have I seen so much go up in prices in a short time like 2022-2024." Another X user penned: "Streaming services are getting to the point where it's just as expensive as cable if you want to be able to view the good stuff from every service!"

Somebody else quipped: "Always thought they had reasonable prices but a $2 hike on both plans is brutal."

Social media users also took to Reddit to air their concerns as someone said: "I'm just gonna end up dropping Disney+ soon.

"My kids are getting too old to want to watch Disney classics and Pixar all the time, Star Wars is basically dead to me and I haven’t seen a Marvel movie in forever that I cared about. $15.99 a month is way too much for something we are watching once or twice a week."

Yet another agreed: "I cut my disney/hulu about a week ago since i've been getting bored with their content.

"That was a decision made before knowing about yet another price hike but now I am even happier for cutting it. F*** every streaming service hiking their prices seemingly multiple times a year."

Another Reddit user complained: "People can't even afford the basics right now. Additionally, a lot of the new "content" is garbage no one wants to watch.

"It's 2024 not 2012. Streaming services shouldn't cost more than $4.99 a month."

The subscription service was launched five years ago, in 2019 and has 153.6 million users as of March 2024.
