ER favourite joins upcoming medical drama set to 'rival Grey's Anatomy' next year

The Last Of Us season two teased in HBO promo

HBO Max's forthcoming medical drama, The Pitt, featuring ER star Noah Wyle, is set to give Grey's Anatomy a run for its money.

The series, which is due to premiere on the streaming platform in 2025 and will consist of 15 episodes, sees Wyle return to his familiar hospital setting as new character John Carter, who can be seen assessing an emergency patient in a teaser.

Drawing stylistic comparisons to Clive Owen and Steven Soderbergh's overlooked period drama The Knick, The Pitt, based in Pittsburgh, is touted as a "realistic examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today's America as seen through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a modern-day hospital".

The main cast is rounded out by Tracy Ifeachor from The Originals, Fiona Dourif of Cult of Chucky, Law and Order's Patrick Ball, Supriya Ganesh, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez and Katherine LaNasa.

Adding another layer of intrigue, The Pitt reunites Wyle with his former ER producers R. Scott Gemmill and John Wells, reports the Mirror.

Warner Bros Television Group chairman Channing Dungey expressed his excitement when the show was first announced in March, stating: "It's no secret Scott, Noah and John know how to make great television.

"When they came to us with the idea of reinvigorating the medical TV genre with a fresh, realistic look at today's modern hospitals, we knew we had to jump on it."

"Their all-star collaboration, along with their impeccable storytelling and unwavering passion they bring to every project, is the perfect prescription for this show to become the next great medical drama," he added.

The Pitt will air next year on HBO Max.
