There was no acting involved from a Coronation Street icon on Saturday after Leicester City completed a dramatic comeback win at Southampton. Steve Cooper’s side looked dead and buried at St Mary’s as they trailed 2-0 after 64 minutes, only to draw level through a Facundo Buonanotte goal and Jamie Vardy penalty.
Then deep into injury time, Jordan Ayew fired from just inside the area to send the away support into ecstacy.
And among the travelling fans was David Neilson, who has played the role of Roy Cropper on the ITV show for 29 years.
For once, Neilson wasn’t playing up to the cameras as he celebrated at the final whistle. Leicester fans delivered a rousing rendition of "Two nil up and you f***** it up,” as their own players celebrated widely on the field.
The 75-year-old joined in with gusto, up on his feet and clapping as he sang along. Footage of his actions soon went viral on social media, and drew a popular response from supporters.
The X account @AwayDays_ , which boasts more than 255,000 followers, posted the video with the caption: “Roy Cropper enjoying himself in the Leicester away end at Southampton today,” followed by laughing emojis.
Neilson was also pictured posing in the stands with a host of other Foxes fans who went to Southampton. The lifelong supporter has never made any secret of his love for Leicester, regularly attending home and away matches when his work schedule allows.
And he could be forgiven for getting carried away with the unlikely victory. The win took Steve Cooper’s side onto nine points for their Premier League campaign, six clear of the bottom three.
It also gives last season’s Championship winners crucial momentum ahead of their midlands derby match next weekend. Leicester host Nottingham Forest this coming Friday, October 25.

Neilson has regularly participated in Alan Birchenall's charity runs around the King Power Stadium. The race was created in honour of the late Leicester player Keith Weller, and raises money for prostate cancer awareness.
His Roy Cropper character is already cemented in British television folklore. He’s been involved in numerous famous storylines, including marrying Hayley Patterson (Julie Hesmondhalgh), the first ever transgender character in UK soap opera.
