Erik ten hag has been told by Jamie Carragher he won't last until the end of the season in charge of Manchester United.

The Red Devils were humiliated by their rivals on Sunday afternoon, with a Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah-inspired Liverpool helping the Merseyside outfit to a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford.

It's already the second defeat of the season for United, who slumped to a 2-1 defeat away to Brighton last weekend.

But following the Liverpool loss, United have been backed to sack Ten Hag in the coming weeks.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the weekend defeat to Liverpool, Carragher said: “I’d say the latter [he’s an obstacle to progress]. I don’t think anything is really going to change in terms of the football they play. What we saw there was the same we saw at the end of last season, teams just running at United’s back four.

"I’ve seen this with Liverpool actually. You go back before Jurgen Klopp came in and there was talk of Brendan Rodgers losing his job at the end of one season.

"They weren’t sure what to do, FSG. They kept him and they changed his staff - exactly what Ten Hag has done here. And they expect something different. The manager is the main man, he dictates what goes on, he decides his philosophy and how he wants to play. Brendan Rodgers was gone in October. Ten Hag said in his interview, ‘We’ll see where we are at the end of the season'."

Carragher added: "And yeah, it’s early days, three games into the season. But I’d be surprised if he’s still in charge at the end of the season.

"The football, the way they talk about playing, Jason Wilcox made a statement last season about a philosophy of play. There isn’t one. You can see it with Slot in the first three games.

"It doesn’t mean he’s going to be successful. There’s different ways of playing but you can already see something, the way they try and play and the profile of players that they’re looking for. With United it looks a mess of players on the pitch."

The ex-Liverpool star finished up with: "If we’re being totally honest, the ownership didn’t want to keep him. They won the cup final and it put them in a position where they weren’t sure what to do.

"They were scurrying around Europe speaking to agents and other managers seeing if they could find someone better than Erik ten Hag. They didn’t feel like they could so they stuck with the manager and they didn’t have the nerve to make the change we felt they needed to do. We know that. And listen they’re probably delaying the inevitable.”

Ten Hag will no doubt welcome the international break following United's dire start to the campaign.

United return to Premier League action on 14 September away to Southampton.
