Mason Mount has promised Manchester United fans that the squad will bounce back after the penalty defeat to rivals Manchester City.

Speaking after the tight contest, which saw United's neighbours edge a nail-biter 7-6 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in normal time, Mount reflected on his involvement in the game. Despite United not managing to replicate their FA Cup final win over City, the midfielder focused on the positives with the start of the Premier League just around the corner. "Not the result we hoped for yesterday, but plenty of positives to build on," he declared via Instagram.

"We'll be ready for Friday!"

Mount's determination is notable considering his debut season at Old Trafford was plagued by injuries. With only 14 league outings and 20 across all competitions, due to a calf problem, the former Chelsea talent's £55million transfer didn't go as planned.

Under ten Hag's management, he will be eager to leave his mark in the upcoming campaign, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Praising Mount's capabilities before their Community Shield clash, Erik ten Hag said: "We know he's a high-class player and just bringing his skills in."

He admitted Mount's struggles last season were significant due to injuries but acknowledged: "Last season, he had a very bad season, a very tough season for him because of all his injuries, so now we are very pleased he had a very good pre-season.

"I'm sure he will now, from this point on, be contributing to the team if he stays fit. That counts for every player."
