Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of signing Lille striker Jonathan David have been boosted by the forward rejecting Roma. The Canadian striker, who has a year left on his current deal in France, has been linked with a host of European clubs this summer after scoring 26 times last season.

And the Serie A side reportedly made the 24-year-old a contract offer in a bid to bring him to Italy.

However, according to L'Equipe, David has turned down the move, despite still being keen to leave Lille.

Ange Postecoglou wants to bolster his forward options this summer, with the future of current No.9 Richarlison still in doubt. Timo Werner has extended his loan stay from RB Leipzig, but has scored just twice for the club after joining in January.

The club have signed Archie Gray from Leeds this summer, while Lucas Bergvall and Min-hyeok Yang have joined from Djurgarden and Gwangon FC respectively. But that trio all signify midfield options, while Spurs have also been linked with Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

David has now spent four years at Lille after signing from Gent in 2020. And he made an immediate impression in his first season, scoring 13 times as the club beat PSG to the Ligue 1 title.

He's also become a critical figure at international level, already having 54 caps to his name. He's scored 28 times for Canada and his goals were pivotal as his country qualified fo the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Spurs were beaten 2-1 in their latest pre-season friendly by Bayern Munich on Saturday, and afterwards Postecoglou admitted he was still searching for signings. However, he stopped short of specifically naming targets, and also conceded his overhaul would be completed this summer.

"We've added the two young guys, but I also think there's been growth from other guys from last year, which naturally makes us stronger," he said. "But yeah, we obviously still got a hand in this window, but I think we'll go beyond this window.

"This was wasn't just tinkering around the edges when I took over, it needed, you know, a big shift from where it was. I was just thinking about last year's pre-season, you know, I reckon 50% of the people who were on that tour are probably not here now."

The Australian has also said the incresed schedule for his club next season will mean more signings are needed. Tottenham ended up fifth in the Premier League in 2023/24, meaning Europa League qualification.
