Rob Brydon, the star of Gavin and Stacey, has dropped a hint that the truth about the infamous fishing trip may forever remain a mystery.

As the beloved BBC show gears up for its final episode on Christmas Day, fans are eagerly anticipating answers to long-standing questions. The previous Christmas special, which aired in 2019, concluded with a cliffhanger as Nessa proposed to Smithy, leaving viewers wondering about his response.

Fans will be hoping the upcoming finale will tie up loose ends, including the events of the fishing trip, a recurring joke throughout the series. The trip, taken by Uncle Bryn (played by Brydon) and his nephew Jason (played by Robert Wilfort), has been a source of tension between the two characters for years, with neither revealing what transpired.

In a recent appearance on Jamie Laing's Great Company podcast, Brydon teased that the truth about the fishing trip might remain under wraps. When asked about the events of that day, the 59-year-old actor responded: "I'm not going to tell you. You wouldn't really want to know, would you? ".

He further explained: "I'm somebody who, if my wife has bought me a present, say at Christmas, and it's under the tree, there is no part of me that wants to go 'I wonder what it is'," reports Wales Online.

"No, no, no, I am for delayed gratification. Let's wait, let's enjoy it. And even when I'm opening it, I'm opening it slowly."

The beloved series 'Gavin and Stacey' has captivated audiences with the endearing tale of Gavin (Matthew Horne) from Essex and Stacey (Joanna Page) from South Wales, charting the pivotal moments in their long-distance romance and the events that unite their quirky families.

First hitting screens on BBC Three in 2007, 'Gavin and Stacey' delivered 20 episodes across three series. The much-anticipated finale sees the original cast reprise their roles, including fan favourites Uncle Bryn and Jason, setting the stage to address the series' lingering mysteries.

James Corden, co-creator and star, has definitively stated that the upcoming Christmas special will be the show's swan song.

Speaking to Hits Radio on Friday, he declared: "It can't carry on, it genuinely can't. And you'll realise that there's certain moments that happen in the episode which make it very, very clear that the show cannot carry on."

Corden emphasised the finality by adding, "We as writers wouldn't know how to carry on that story."

Don't miss 'Gavin And Stacey: The Finale', broadcasting on BBC One at 9pm on Christmas Day, with catch-up available on BBC iPlayer.
