BBC Breakfast reports on Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire

BBC Breakfast was halted on Wednesday as Sally Nugent and Jon Kay issued some breaking news to viewers.

Sally began: "Good morning, it is Wednesday 27th November. A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has begun potentially ending months of conflict in Lebanon."

Jon continued: "This agreement, which was announced by US President Joe Biden last night, came into effect at 4am local time today, which was about two o'clock here in the UK."

Sally added: "The deal involves Hezbollah fighters moving around 20 miles from the Israeli border north of the Litani River."

"Then Israeli troops will gradually pull out of the country which they invaded two months ago in response to a year of rocket attacks from Hezbollah were based in the south of Lebanon," her co-host explained.

Sally continued to explain: "A UN force would remain in the south, and over time, there would be an increased Lenaese military presence there too."

Jon went on to say that if the ceasefire "holds" it would end Lebanon's "deadliest conflict" in decades.

A "breaking news" banner appeared on the screen as Jon explained that their colleague, Nick Johnson, had the latest update.

As a video played, Nick said in a voiceover: "A silent sky over Lebanon's border with Israel. A long-awaited ceasefire between Isreal and Hezbollah is now in effect.

"It's a deal President Biden has been working toward for months."

The show proceeded to share a clip from Joe Biden's speech in which he said: "Let me be clear if Hezbollah or anybody else breaks the deal and poses a direct threat to Israel, then Israel detains the right to self-defence."

Nick also read out a statement from Sir Keir Starmer, which said: "The UK and its allies will continue to be at the forefront of efforts to break the ongoing cycle of violence in pursuit of a long-term. sustainable peace in the Middle East."

BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
