Call the Midwife: BTS footage of new Christmas Special and Series 14

Call the Midwife has announced "the end slate" as they say 'we're very close' to wrapping things up.The much anticipated Season 14 is about to pull curtains on filming as the cast and crew speed to get it done and dusted in the run up to Christmas.

The “end of slate” refers to when a clapperboard is filmed upside down at the end of a scene or take in a film or video production.

A clapperboard is the tool used in filmmaking and video production to mark scenes and takes, and to synchronise sound and picture, most famously snapped when the director shouts: “Action!”

In the season 13 finale, Trixie (Helen George) appeared to be leaving the show after her husband Matthew announced he was moving to New York to rebuild his business.

However, she decided to follow her heart and go to Matthew. However, she's set to return for the upcoming Christmas special.

On their Instagram page the show shared a snap of Zephryn Taitte (Cyril), as "he completes a close up for an important S14 scene", and wrote: "Behind the scenes on Call the Midwife Series 14: the End Slate. We're getting veeeeeeery close to the end of filming for Series 14! Our team is looking forward to taking a well earned break very soon!

"Not everybody of course," they added. "For our editing, sound and production teams, there is much more work still to be done once the cameras stop rolling, and even the actors will still be called in to add some extra sound and dialogue to the finished product.

"Yet the end is approaching… Our actors are no strangers to end slates and emotional moods... and let's just say this last episode has been very full of emotional end slates..."

They went on to appeal to fans to give them some support. "By the way, have you voted for Call the Midwife in the TV Choice Awards yet? If not, then PLEASE do! Final voting is closing very soon! BEST FAMILY DRAMA: Call the Midwife."

For the first time, the BBC will air a two-part Call the Midwife Christmas special. This year's festive trip to 1960s east London will consist of two 60-minute episodes rather than one 90-minute episode, complete with a Christmas cliffhanger.

The celebratory instalment follows an explosive season thirteen finale, which left fans desperate to know whether Matthew Aylward (played by Olly Rix) and his wife Trixie’s (Helen George) marriage will survive.

With Helen George already revealing her character would return to Poplar, the 2024 Yuletide episode could be the perfect setting for viewers to find out what is next for the pair.

In the special, the midwives of Nonnatus House continue their work delivering babies while a funfair brings joy to Poplar. However, as the locals gear up for a carol concert, news of an escaped prisoner sparks fears following a series of break-ins.

The period drama officially returns with the brand new Christmas special while the fourteenth season will be back sometime in 2025.
