A woman was left “in tears” after her guitar, which she and her husband Richard had owned for decades, fetched a surprising amount at auction.

Appearing on the BBC show Annette and her husband Richard shared the story of how they came to own the guitar. Antiques expert Caroline Hawley asked: “Tell me how did you come to own this gorgeous guitar?” to which Richard replied: “We bought it from a chap from Hull, who used to play in a group called the Ramrods.”

Caroline quipped: “The guy was from Hull. I’m from Hull. How extraordinary.” Richard went on, “He moved down here to play,” before explaining that the guitarist had to sell the item due to financial troubles, adding: “he got a bit hard up financially.”

The couple bought the guitar in the 1980s. Caroline explained its make: “It's a Fender Jaguar, dates from 1960, ‘62, ‘63, that sort of period.”

As she examined the guitar closer, she said: “Look at this lovely faux tortoise shell scratch plate. And this is a sunburst model. And the original strap by the looks of it, lovely leather strap.”

Richard revealed that he sometimes played it himself. Caroline estimated the guitar’s value to be between £300 and £500, but at auction, it sold for a staggering £1,050.

With a tear in her eye, host Paul asked Annette what she planned to do with the money. She simply replied: “Grandchildren.”

The guitar wasn’t the only surprise in the show’s history. Previously, expert Anita Manning was left gobsmacked after a necklace bought from a charity shop three decades ago, made a massive windfall when it went under the hammer.

The guest explained that she had bought the necklace in 1988, and when asked how much she paid for it, Bernadette responded: “Well, at that time, I paid a lot of money for it. I paid £10.” However, she had no idea what the necklace was worth today.

Although Anita estimated the item’s value at £700, the gavel came down at an astonishing £5,000, leaving everyone shocked by the incredible windfall.
