Fans of The Chase pointed out a controversial strategy that proved successful for one player - despite him offering a laughable answer.

Presenter Bradley Walsh was back at the helm of the popular ITV quiz show as he welcomed on four new faces to take on the Chaser, Mark Labbett, in a bid to win a cash prize. Testing their general knowledge skills was Gary from London, Ginny from Falmouth, Beth from Manchester and Wesley from Bristol.

First up to play was Gary, who used a very amusing strategy to bag himself a place in the final. In the cashbuilder round he made waves on social media as he made a very silly guess.

When asked what animals are most associated with the Calgary Stampede, the player replied: "Beaver". It was incorrect, with the right answer being horses.

Fans on Twitter thought the slip up was hilarious. One wrote: "#TheChase what animals are most associated with the Calgary Stampede - Gary's answer - 'Beavers'"

Another added: "A stampede of beavers?! #TheChase." While a third laughed: "'Don't get beaver and a horse mixed up'. Why did I chuckle at beaver #TheChase."

In the head-to-head round, where he played for an offer of £4,000, the contestant admitted to guessing most of the questions. While he didn't show much wit, Gary seemed to have luck on his side as he eventually made it back home to the team.

Making a sly dig, Brad congratulated him as he said: "Four guesses and a no. Well done, Gary, you're through to the final. Good job mate."  He added: "He is a good guesser."

Fans couldn't help but comment on the player's strategy too, with one writing: "Guessing your way to the final is never a good strategy. Amazingly, it worked for Gary. #TheChase." Another wrote: "Say 'it's a guess' one more time! #TheChase."

In the final Chase, Gary was joined by Wesley after the other two players were sent packing after being caught by the Chaser. Together, they played for a grand total of £5,000 - Meaning that they would each take home £2,500 if successful.

They set 14 questions for the Chase to tackle, after getting a two-point head start and securing 12 answers correctly. With two pushbacks, Mark still caught the team with 40 seconds remaining on the clock.

The Chase airs weekdays from 5pm on ITV and ITVX
