Call the Midwife executives have given fans an exciting update regarding the fourteenth series of the BBC drama. The news comes ahead of the upcoming Christmas special, which is set to air over the 2024 festive season.

Period drama fans have been tuning into Call the Midwife on Christmas Day since 2012 and it appears that this year is no different. While a specific airing date has yet to be unveiled, it’s thought the special will mimic previous iterations by airing on BBC One at around 8pm.

The celebratory instalment comes off the back of an explosive season thirteen finale, which left fans desperate to know whether Matthew Aylward (played by Olly Rix) and his wife Trixie’s (Helen George) marriage will survive. With Helen already revealing her character would return to Poplar, the 2024 Yuletide episode could be the perfect setting for viewers to find out what is next for the pair.

Sadly, it is too early for a Call the Midwife Christmas special trailer. However, bosses have “pinky promised” that the programme will premiere on the small screen soon.

“The Autumn nights are closing in here at Call the Midwife, and that means there are just a few weeks of filming left on Series 14 before we start the engines on our countdown to the new Christmas Special,” read a dedicated Instagram post.

“The team have been filming in our much-loved church location in London, and they've sent us this intriguing behind-scenes shot.”

In the photograph, Nurse Phyllis Crane (played by Linda Bassett) could be seen raising her pinky alongside Shelagh Turner (Laura Main) and Sr Monica Joan.

“There's very much a feeling of approaching the finishing line on set - and then comes the best part - showing YOU what we've been up to,” the caption continued.

“The year is now 1970 - the world has changed in many ways, but the babies keep coming, and the need for the Nonnatuns is still all too obvious.”

The Instagram post then announced that the period drama would officially return with a brand new Christmas special as well as the fourteenth season sometime in 2025.

Fans of the long-running BBC drama have flocked to the comments section to have their say, with one writing: “My Fav. I can’t wait, my Sunday TV treat returns 2025.”

“Absolutely love Call the Midwife!!! Cannot wait for the Christmas Special,” said someone else.

“Bring back Chummie! Even if it’s only one episode. Bring her back,” a fourth pleaded.

An official airing date for season fourteen of Call the Midwife has yet to be announced.

However, fans will be pleased to hear that the series has already been renewed for a fifteenth instalment in 2026.

Earlier this summer Helen announced she’d be returning to the programme as Trixie despite tearfully revealing her character would be leaving Poplar to join her husband in New York.

“It's quite a return for Trixie, because she's coming back sans-husband, so that's an interesting twist,” she explained.

Heidi Thomas, the creator of the show, added: "Series 14 is set in 1970, launching us into an exciting new decade.

"We can't wait to bring you another season full of touching, exciting, emotional stories from Nonnatus House."

Call the Midwife returns to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this Christmas.
