Grand Designs: Kevin gets 'tearful'

Grand Designs host Kevin McCloud was visibly moved following the heartfelt revelation from a guest who had received a cancer diagnosis.

The latest instalment of the popular Channel 4 show saw Kevin reappear on screens alongside Tony and Ara, a couple with grand ambitions.

Determined to transform Tony's ancestral abode into a 'wellness' sanctuary amid the trees close to Henley-on-Thames, they aimed to create a tranquil haven, particularly for Ara. Having left her corporate life behind, Ara needed a serene space to recuperate due to her autoimmune disease.

Despite facing a monumental task, Tony and Ara dove headfirst into the venture, commencing demolition and laying the first stones of their dream dwelling in 2019.

Tony bravely shouldered the role of project manager and committed himself to physically constructing their abode, embracing a hands-on approach to shave expenses, optimistically planning to 'learn on the job'.

Amidst the turmoil of construction, an episode teeming with struggles, it was Ara's admission of her cancer condition that touched Kevin and moved him to tears, reports Devon Live.

After four years of hard graft and overcoming numerous obstacles, the couple completed their construction, with host Kevin expressing his deep emotional reaction to their significant achievement.

During his visit to the newly finished home, Kevin reflected: "I'm approaching Tony and Ara's house with a little trepidation. On top of the emotional, psychological, physical load this project has brought comes this latest news of Ara's cancer, which is so sad."

Ara opened up, remarking: "Nobody could have predicted what was going to happen to me. Now the path is to do peace, contentment and gratitude. I have so much to be grateful for, I live in a little piece of heaven. It's heaven round here."

Visibly moved, Kevin responded: "It's my turn to get a bit tearful now, I'm in awe of the pair of you. Very tough and very wonderful of you to have got this far, I think it's just a great thing."

Grand Designs continues on Wednesdays at 9pm on Channel 4.
