All Creatures Great and Small teaser clip for new Channel 5 drama

All Creatures Great and Small's character Siegfried Farnon, portrayed by Samuel West, seems to be under immense pressure trying to manage in Darrowby.

In the Channel 5 series' fifth season premiere, fans witnessed the resolute vet run the practice virtually alone as his colleagues James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph) and Tristan Farnon (Callum Woodhouse) contributed to war efforts afar.

Even with a new vet in tow, Samuel openly admitted that Siegfried is spread thin on the ground. Before the season started, the actor shared: "We've got a lovely baby, and I'm taking my godparenting duties very seriously.

"In fact, Jimmy is undoubtedly the person in the house I get on with best, and certainly the one with the best conversation. So, it's mostly a feeling of butter spread over too much bread."

The actor revealed that control freak Siegfried is hesitant to trust novice Richard Carmody (James Anthony-Rose), given his scant hands-on experience, reports Lancs Live.

Delving into his character's current plight, he explained: "So yes, sort of running to stand still, really. Quite a lot of things get ignored. Like my love life, for instance.

"And yes, if the war has been, so far, a process of octopus-like reaching out and trying to hold the walls of Skeldale House together, then those arms are having to work much harder to keep it all together, even though there are other people inside the box."

Over the years, fans have been cheering on a potential romance between Siegfried and housekeeper Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) in All Creatures Great and Small. However, during a recent appearance on ITV's Lorraine, the actors shed some light on their characters' romantic prospects.

Samuel admitted: "They'd be a disaster". Anna echoed his sentiments, stating there were "lots of reasons" why they shouldn't end up together.

Despite this, Samuel hinted at a possible future for the pair, saying: "We were thinking maybe when the children have grown up and have left home, no telly. There's not much else to do!"

While their relationship remains uncertain, the bond between Siegfried and Tristan is as strong as ever. After leaving at the end of season three to fight in the war, Tristan returned to Darrowby just in time for baby Jimmy's christening.

Reflecting on his character's return, Callum said: "It was slightly daunting in the sense of, 'Is it going to feel weird? Am I going to feel a bit out of the loop? 'but my first day back was a full day in The Drovers, which is probably the best place to film Tristan's first scenes back.

"And I remember coming back, we did the morning and warmed into it, and then coming back after our lunch break it didn't feel like I'd been away at all to be honest.

"I just slotted back in so comfortably and so well and was having all of the same banter and jokes with all of the same cast and crew that's still with us from series one. Yes, it was just really lovely."

All Creatures Great and Small continues Thursdays on Channel 5 from 9pm
