He told viewers: "They're fine, they're fine. My mother went on a cruise the other day, I'm not sure if she knew where she was but she enjoyed getting there

She said: 'I don't always know where I'm going but I enjoy getting there'" and I thought if that is her philosophy, that might have to be mine as well."

The veteran actress and her husband and fellow actor Timothy West, 89, remain active in their careers, with the starlet explaining that not working would make them "very depressed."

Speaking to The Times, she candidly discussed the effects of ageing on her memory and daily life. She explained: "As one gets older, one's memory and living from minute to minute changes, doesn't it? You get less efficient.

"My memory is less good. I mean, I do forget things and that's age, the same as everybody else." Determined not to let her conditon take her job, she has continued to work in TV and theatre.

Most recently, she has been recording new voiceovers for a production at the Tabard Studio Theatre in West London.

Scales first took on the role of Queen Victoria more than 44 years ago, performing it in An Evening with Queen Victoria which debuted in London and travelled around the world until 2007.

The actress has also portrayed the British monach in several TV productions, including the children's TV show Station Jim in 2001 and the BBC drama Victoria: An Intimate History in 2003.
