All Creatures Great and Small: New trailer for Channel 5 show

The beloved TV series All Creatures Great and Small is set to grace our screens once more on Thursday, September 19. The popular show, inspired by the captivating tales of renowned author James Herriot, is returning for a fifth series, along with a festive special scheduled for later this year.

Nicholas Ralph will reprise his role as vet James Herriot, but things have changed for him. He's been stationed at RAF Abingdon, while his wife Helen (played by Rachel Shenton) has been caring for their newborn son at home.

Nicholas shared some insights about filming the new series of All Creatures Great and Small, confessing that while he's accustomed to working with animals, working with babies was "brilliant", but one co-star left him feeling "terrified".

Before the series premiere, Nicholas revealed: "Yes, two little babies! They were absolutely brilliant. Like any other actor, they took a minute to get used to everything - after all, they were just three months old.

"But after a few days, they settled in, and it was amazing to see them smile when they started to recognise you. They were great to work with-just adorable and so smiley once they got comfortable."

"We also have Jelly Jimmy - absolutely terrifying! It's ironic they call it "Jelly" because it felt like he was made of concrete - so heavy!

"And he was triple the size of one of the babies we worked with, almost like a toddler with a baby's face. The real babies were far superior to Jelly Jimmy."

Nicholas dropped some hints about what's in store for James in the upcoming series, revealing: "James thinks he's going to come back and be Super Vet, Super Dad, and juggle both roles seamlessly. But the reality is quite different.

"Having a little baby and trying to be a vet at the same time, with those two worlds colliding, is much more challenging than he anticipated. That makes for a lot of fun in the episodes."

The star-studded cast includes Rachel Shenton, Samuel West, Anna Madeley, Tristan Farnon, James Anthony-Rose amongst other well-known faces, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The official summary for the fifth series of All Creatures Great and Small states: "It is Spring 1941 and we return to Darrowby to find young baby Jimmy keeping our favourite Skeldale House family on their toes. Helen is getting the hang of motherhood with James away at RAF Abingdon, Mrs Hall and Siegfried are enjoying having a little one around and Carmody is now part of the furniture.

"With World War II now fully underway, Siegfried is taking up the slack at the surgery, Mrs Hall and Helen are considering their contribution within the community, and Carmody is eager to step up. Siegfried is keen to have everyone back, but Tristan's surprise return won't be quite as straightforward as he hoped."
