Ruth Langsford once jokingly warned that she would become a "spiteful ex" if her husband, Eamonn Holmes, left her for a younger woman.

This comment surfaced in an unearthed clip from an episode of This Morning amidst news of Eamonn’s new relationship following their split.

The duo, who were married for 14 years, shocked the entertainment world when Ruth announced their divorce in May. Eamonn, 64, has since been linked with Katie Alexander, 42, and the couple recently embarked on a cruise holiday together.

Back in 2019, during a discussion on This Morning, Ruth referenced the age-gap romance between Bake Off star Paul Hollywood and Summer Monteys-Fullam as a segue to tease the potential of her own marital dissolution.

Eamonn explained to viewers: “The baker, the Great British Bake Off man, Paul Hollywood. He’s a 53-year-old of age and everyone is outraged he’s got a girlfriend called Summer, not because she’s called Summer, but because she’s 24.”

It seemed then that the Irish presenter was planning to defend Paul, turning to Ruth and saying: “People like you, huffing and puffing, going ''well.'' Say I ran off with a 24-year-old?”

But Ruth then appeared to address any younger women who were watching, adding: “Take him, seriously, he's yours.”

Eamonn quipped he would be stuck with a “spiteful ex” if he opted to leave Ruth, so she said: “I would be so spiteful. You wouldn’t want me.”

Their banter over such a scenario came full circle when Monteys-Fullam, now 28, recently took a swipe at the former couple on Instagram. She shared a news article about Eamonn and his new partner, highlighting the age difference and adding a comment: "Do I need to say anything else?" along with laughing emojis and the remarks, "If you know, you know. I don't forget or forgive."

The irony of the situation hasn't been lost on viewers. Following Eamonn’s new public romance, some fans noted Ruth seemed less than her usual vibrant self on TV.

Comments from viewers included observations about her appearing saddened, with one noting: "You can tell that Ruth has been hurting from the pictures of Eamonn with a younger blonde; Ruth looks like she has been crying as her eyes look puffed up."

Another viewer added: "Cannot be easy for Ruth when Eamonn features in most newspapers."

Both Holmes and Langsford have opted to skip this year's National Television Awards. According to a source: "Organisers of the bash very much wanted Eamonn and Ruth to attend; they are well-loved. But they aren't nominated and they haven't taken up invites to be in boxes to watch the show.

“Those around them think that they want to avoid any run-ins or unwanted attention at all costs."

Currently, Eamonn is on a summer break from his role at GB News, spending time on a Mediterranean cruise with Alexander, which has reportedly shocked Ruth and her friends.
